I was in an inpatient treatment program about 6-7 years ago where I and a few others started playing consistently for about a 6-month period. I grew playing matches with my Dad a few times and month and so always had the knowledge of how to play the game at least at a novice to intermediate level, but never bothered to actually read much as far as strategy was concerned, but during this period of time in treatment I bought a few books and looked into more advanced strategies. As I tried to memorize some of the techniques and various openings and whatnot, I developed new strategies on my own. At the same time, it was easy to get caught up in 'needing' to employ the new things I was learning, which was necessary to a degree, but also caused it's own problems as my mind began to focus on only the new strategies and how I could employ them, rather than the still-more and always important overall layout of the board.
So basically what I guess I'm saying is, it takes a lot of games to really start integrating new 'moves' and techniques, so it's probably important to play a lot of games as often as possible, and expect to lose a good handful while your mind is still adapting to your change in gameplay.
I'd probably play a few matches with you on chess.com, as I've done with a few other members over the years. Personally I've forgotten nearly all the old stuff I learned. I basically just play like I did growing up which is simply to have no true strategy other than dismantle my opponent piece by piece until I see an area I can expose or take advantage of. That's essentially my strategy and it usually fares well for me, though I do tend to lose lengthier games against opponents that are at a semi-advanced/advanced level. I'd say I'm probably an "advanced-intermediate", but I'm not immune to just playing stupid as fuck on occasion. Ha.
