Option to disable embedded images/vids in PM only

    Sure, might as well have option for posts too. Yes, having a way to view the image once you see the message/post is a good idea - instead of having to click the link and seeing in a new tab.

    The current phrasing for the check-boxes is "Enable images embedded in posts:" and "Enable videos embedded in posts:" but in practice it actually toggles it in posts and in PMs.

    I think this one has been suggested before. It's a good idea, I just don't have the time to implement it at the moment.

    As for loading images in-page when clicked, I doubt it will ever get implemented. The straightforward way to do it would be via javascript and I don't the the JS on/images off demographic is large enough to justify it (or exists at all). I can think of one way to possibly do it via some high level CSS wankery involving the beloved background image on a block element in place of a real image hack that's popular these days (we use it here for SVGs) but I don't think I could guarantee the preloading behavior which is kind of the point to start with.
