   If I do a google image search and an image pops up but then when I go to visit the page, the site makes me log in to view that page, is there some way I can view the page without a valid login? I mean google image search got the picture from somewhere so it seems like there might be a way.

   You can even do that and press "Search google for this image" which will cache the image from the webpage into google and find every instance of that exact image in every size on the web.

    Yeah, the full story is -
    
    Telstra is the biggest telephone/internet provider in Australia and Dodo is a small reseller on the Telstra network. They both have their own routing tables but share a bunch of hardware - for some reason Dodo had write access to global Telstra tables, so when someone accidentally pushed BGP updates globally, all Telstra traffic (dunno how much, but Telstra handles at LEAST 100x more traffic than Dodo) was routed through Dodo hardware and their infrastructure collapsed in a matter of seconds. This also turned Telstra into a black hole, which broke connectivity for virtually all big businesses and the government for an hour or so.
