Giants and other heavenly critters
-
2018-06-09 at 8:01 AM UTCI've started reading the King James Version of the Bible. I chose the KJV because it's the the most direct english translation that isn't watered down with modern verbiage. This does make KJV more difficult and time consuming to read,
ex: "And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter."
But for the most part, I like this version because it holds the poetic spirit used when it was written back in 1611. The modern versions like NIV or NLT lose some emotional impact when they use simpler language for readability. It's the same message, but a more awkward, less profound way of getting there.
Anyway, here is an interesting passage from Genesis after the descendants of Adam and before the great flood.
"There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
The word "giant" is translated as "nephilim" in some versions. One way I can look at this passage is that the "sons of God" are heavenly creatures that literally came in the women of the earth, and the women had their offspring, which were giants.
Another way I could read this is that, again, the heavenly creatures fertilized the earthly women who had children, and these children became the "mighty men of old, men of renown", which means these children grew up to become the giants.
These giants and other offspring must have been kind of a bad deal because within a couple chapters God decided that Noah and his family were the only ones left on Earth worth saving and he killed everyone else in the great flood. This is not the only time the word "giants" is used in the bible, so maybe I'll update when I get there.
How do you read this passage? What are your thought on nephilim or giants or other half-not-completely human people?
Or discuss anything else you think is legitimately part human and part inhuman. Be it angels, demons, yetis, sasquatch, centaur, etc. Cryptozoology is fair game here. -
2018-06-09 at 8:11 AM UTCAs it so happens, KJV is my favorite version of the bible as well.
when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them
The sons of God could be interpreted as the sons of the righteous. But then i would ask why the flood was necessary. I think "Nephilim" would be a more accurate description of what is being spoken of. Also, isn't Adam related to Cain? Cain did commit a bunch of sins, most famous among which killing his brother. I would say, the flood cleanses the world of the evil of the progeny of Cain.
But that is only true if i get my lineages right, but hey, i ain't no Christian scholar so give a sinner a break. -
2018-06-09 at 8:15 AM UTCAlso, i would argue angels and demons are not human like, or have a combination of human and inhuman features. As we know demons are just fallen angels and i don't remember God creating angels in His image.

It doesn't say for sure in the geneology passages whether or not any of Cain's descendants survived the flood or not. In order for that to have happened, one of Cain's descendants would had to have married Noah's three sons before the flood and they would actually still have descendants to this day if that were true.
A theory on this is that Noah's son Ham (the one Noah cursed because he made fun of him while he was drunk and naked) was married to a Cain descendant, because Ham's descendants became the Canaanites who are more or less the antagonistic people of the old testament because of their curse. But there is no expicit mention of a link between the curses.

I haven't gotten to any mentions of the angels yet, only half way through Genesis. I think true angels would be in the image of God because men are created in His image, and angels are men in heaven.
But I think that whatever did mate with the daughters of the earth would have to be some kind of inhuman angels or demons, (but not true angels). But the creation of heavenly things isn't spoken of yet at this point so maybe your earlier idea about it being sons of the righteous has more weight than I thought.
The order of creation is a doozy for me to wrap my head around.

2018-06-09 at 9:40 AM UTCYeah the chronological order of creation according to the bible gets a bit foggy. Also, angels and men are two different beings. Once a human soul goes to heaven they don't transform into an angel. They are just a human soul in heaven.
But perhaps it would depend on your definition of "angel". -

If you start with the first word of Psalm 46, “God,” and count 46 words into the text. You’ll come to the work “shake.” Now go to the end of Psalm 46 and count back 46 words, and you come to the word “spear.”
Shake-spear.

just for YOU, OP!!
people think the giant story is a myth.
but we have actual bone structures that when assembled reveal humans from 13 feet to 20 feet in height.
and the reason we searched for those bones was do to a Wild Bill Cody (Wyoming) story:
wild Bill had a western themed show included real native americans and real old west cowboys.
and the indians tell a story of their own ancestors who were hunted by Giants that eventually died in a FLOOD!!
Native Americans Tell of Giants | Nephilim Hunters

“Buffalo Bill” Cody tells of meeting a Pawnee Indian carrying, what an army surgeon declared to be a thigh bone of a giant man. When asked where the bone came from, the Indian said that long ago a race of giants had lived in the area who were 15 feet tall! -
2019-12-30 at 6:51 AM UTCthis is from the story: nephilim-hunters.com/native-americans-tell-of-giants
“Buffalo Bill” Cody tells of meeting a Pawnee Indian carrying, what an army surgeon declared to be a thigh bone of a giant man. When asked where the bone came from, the Indian said that long ago a race of giants had lived in the area who were 15 feet tall! “They could outrun a buffalo and even carry it in one hand” The Indian went on to say that these giants did not believe in a Great Spirit. So He caused a great rain to come, and the water kept rising higher and higher. So it drove them to the hills and then to the mountains and finally to the mountain tops. But even the mountain tops were submerged so all the giant men were drowned. After the flood, the Great spirit decided that he had made man too large and powerful. So He would correct the mistake and make man of smaller size and less strength. He said this story is a matter of Indian history passed down from time immemorial.

it appears the story of Giants and Noah's Flood is factual after all!! -
