If it doesn't already exist, there should be groups for people with enough time and money in their hands, along with the capacity and knowledge, to pursue private research.
Publishing or collaborating outside of academia or a significant commercial research institution is difficult. We'll see how long it's possible to balance a paying job with actually interesting work, I mean I think I can drag my degree (and by extension ability to publish and apply for grants with an advisor) for up to eight years before they kick me out.
