How do I to play music on youtube and turn my phones screen off

   Well I had a shitty nokia lumia windows phone and I would listen to youtube, and be able to turn the screen off to save battery life and to be able to put it in my pocket. I got a new android phone today and if I turn the screen off it stops youtube..
   
   how can I fix this problem? I'm fairly computer illiterate, but I've been told this phone is so much better by everyone yet it can't do the one thing that I want..

   do you really have to buy an sd card, download multiple files and hook it up to your pc , to be able to root it , to be able to then delete the original youtube program to download a download that will finally make it do just one simple thing?

   idk man but i have a galaxy s4 and it updated the other day and for some reason they decided to replace the part where it usually notified me if i had unread texts or emails with a bar that just says "samsung" so i have to unlock my phone every time i want to check it for messages (it usually has to be on silent because im in class or work or some shit). its fucking irritating
