How to be more sophisticated?

    I'm trying to step up my game in knowledge of the arts, cinema, fine dining, literature, and philosophy/psychology

    can anyone give me some ideas?

    Well the best way to do that is to register for some classes. Those subjects are offered at any university or Jr. college. Financial school aid is really easy to get and it's free money. If you're not into school then just visit your nearest library. Philosophy and psychology were prerequisites I needed for the nursing program. They were two of my favorite classes.

    "Sophistication" is kind of a bullshit thing IMO, by and large people seem to take it to just mean a classical liberal arts education that you don't forget into adulthood. There's some basic things like how you talk (not so much speaking "proper english" as avoiding a certain valid subset of the language (e.x. "ain't" is an obvious example of a well formed word that's considered "low brow")). And after that it comes down to a certain set of idioms and cultural references, the most cliche of which are the handful of shakespeare quotes upper-middle and upper class adults are expected to know. I'm not sure there's really any shortcut to getting the necessary indoctrination, sorta difficult to work around by design (since the idea seems to tacitly be a means of separating social wheat from chaff (another dumb idiom)). I guess the community college classes suggestion might actually be the way to go although I don't really think it's worth taking a 3 unit class for some social dickwaving

    I've been doing better at that. I think I'm better off alone sometimes. Its funny because I despise the people I know in real life, but some of the people on here I actually feel for.
    I guess I'm just your typical loner.

    I've actually cut out forums by atleast 80 percentile the last week and a half, got a promotion at my new job already, but I'm just still not satisfied.

    I did go to the library today like chem mentioned, I was going to do it anyways, and got a few books, so I hope that will help me remain calm and cut back my drinking.

    Those things are a great supplement but I would just be sophisticated in your own world of today and learn as much as you can about your place in it then get really good at being yourself then you just use those things - the ones that apply - as your interest arises in them rather than setting out to be sophisticated. Some things like being really good at stealing food and being alone would not come off sophisticated in the 'higher echelons' but I probably have a fuller life than all the people from high school I look back on and at their FB profiles and I don't HAVE to do anything. I do whatever I want all day and I will get really good at my way. Sometimes it will seem like it will take forever just to be anything at all but also sometimes there will be quantum leaps.

    Nailed it. Things you have no interest in aren't going to last for long. I would say quit your job, sell all your shit and go travel the world. That would be the easiest mentally, vacation is rarely experienced as pressure. Though that's probably not feasible for most of you financially so the library would probably be the next best thing. I just started this "52 books in 52 weeks" thing, I'm doing it my own way where I pick one new subject each week, again something that's interesting and not going to bore me to death. You could do some variation of that, one book a week is hardly any difficult feat. Get solid paper books though, for some reason people forget 90 percent of the stuff they read on the internet but retain most of what is on hard copy. I'd also recommend hard backs instead of paper backs, they just seem easier to handle/read.
