You're at home, watching TV in peace when you're disturbed by a knock at the door. You open to see a hooded boy of 14 or 15 and his little sister through the screen, and he asks if they can come inside to use your phone. He raises his head, and you see blackness where the whites of his eyes belong. The hair raises on the back of your neck and a sense of dread consumes you. Your dog cowers behind the couch. These are black eyed children. There are several theories on their origin, and what is certain is that they will try to lure you away in public or they will invite themselves into your home. Their motives are as mysterious as their origins and, with encounters ranging over four decades on at least three continents, sightings have been attributed to extraterrestrial activity, conspiratorial men-in-black associations, navajo legends and more.
I first read about them maybe 16 months ago, after reading of an encounter in the neighboring township. About a week after, my ex's mother was walking her dogs when her long-haired chihuahua slowed down and fell behind. She heard the dog whimper and whirled around to be greeted by such a beast. The hooded figure beckoned to her, "It looks like you lost your dog, ma'am." She instructed them to give her dog back immediately and they said, "Why don't you come her and get her?" After a tense standoff, the dog was released. She set off into the night and put ten steps behind her before looking over her shoulder. The boy had vanished.
I can't verify the reliability of her report, but I find it fascinating nonetheless and I always enjoy a good story. Who else is fascinated by this phenomenon?
