I wanted to be a neuropharmacologist. I was top 30 in my class with mostly As in high school (not that that means anything given the state of our education system), did damn near perfect in any math/science classes, could memorize long lists of anything that interested me, had a "photographic memory" (it's not like the movies) and had a two year college scholarship. The plan was to get a part time job and go to school while living at home for a few years and saving up for the rest of my college education during the first couple years. But, living in bumfuck nowhere, with family that was unsupportive at best, I couldn't get a ride anywhere. I tried to sell everything I had to get a moped or something to go to college, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.
I then proceeded to destroy a large portion of my brain cells with various intoxicants, so now I'm left at approximately half of my original intellect, which somehow still seems to be far greater than those around me.
I like my job as a machinist now, but I can't help but wonder what might have been if I'd been given a fair chance at life and/or wouldn't have started doing drugs.

^I always hear these stories of near success that turned into failure.
