Just tried, you're right. I've inadvertently gotten around this in Safari by pinning the NIS tab, which essentially means it's always open and stays within that domain. Whenever a link would take me to a different site, my browser moves it over from the pinned tabs to its own. Maybe this is a feature in yours as well?

I've inadvertently gotten around this by not clicking direct links from lazybone users too lazyboned to embed.

The fact remains. Direct YouTube links moves away from NIS rather than create a new tab. FIX IT LANNY.

But if you make it that it opens in a new tab,

To me, it forces the browser to leave this site and go to the link posted. Christ, just have it open in a new tab.

Right click > open link in new tab

Shouldn't have to do that. Lanny, the admin, should want to keep people here. Links to external sites should open as a new tab/window, not totally take us away from NIS.

It's two clicks. Also, your browser should be able to be configured to open any links in a new tab.

I'll be teched the Fuck out helping my mom move from her apartment to a new house and a distant cousin who I haven't seen since I was like 13 is going to be helping as well. Should be either fun as hell or terrifying. Though aren't they both one in the same? Time will tell!

Edit : this was in reference to the little easter bit in the beginning of the thread. Youtube links always open in a new tab for me.

I'm not crazy about this idea, you have a lot of options for choosing to open a link in a new tab while browser default behavior is to follow links in the same tab.

I'm OK with people leaving my site when they want leave. This attitude towards design is a pet peeve of mine honestly, like the idea that you make products to try and absorb as much of your users time as you can regardless of what they want. "Engagement" has become a euphemism for "forcefully holding user attention, sometimes against their will" in industry these days.

And in the special case of link behavior I think it's doubly vacuous. Firstly I think most users are intelligent enough exit a site if they want to, so the idea that you can sidestep a user exit by opening all outbound links in another window/tab seems unlikely to pan out. But even if it is true that you can take a user who's willing to click a link and leave your webspace and fiddle with browser behavior and somehow make them stay you're not doing that user any favors.
