Right now I primarily use Chromecast. It's convenient, but it's not everything I'd want in a streaming device. I've seriously considered Apple TV because I have a MacBook and you can mirror your screen to your TV, which would be pretty great for my purposes, not to mention it's effective for streaming otherwise.

I have a NAS storage device for media and use a raspberry pi with openElec as a media player though

I torrent and just watch everything on my monitor or laptop. I've been thinking about getting a TV since I'm playing more console games (well just one, but a lot) these days and it seems like it would be nice to have a large screen I could sit away from but I don't think I can really justify it.

But yeah, media streaming services are shit. I guess netflix has a decent selection but there's the whole evil empire thing.

I've noticed I like less and less of what I see on Netflix and Hulu, enough that I may soon have to reevaluate my subscriptions. I can't watch Unsolved Mysteries forever, and when I'm done I have no idea what I'm going to do. Still, none of the others is even close really.

I find the Chromecast works great and is cheap. I only use it for youtube.

Screen mirroring is kinda lame. Not worth worrying about as a feature.

I use a Belkin Miracast dongle and stream from my LG V10. Screen mirroring is only lame if you want network programming.

Can you stream video over that? I bought one for like $20 on sale, works well for games (over ethernet anyway) but didn't know there was a media player extension for it

You can stream your desktop by hitting the power icon and selecting "minimize big picture", so you can do anything your PC can do. I either just open media up in a browser or run Kodi as a non-Steam app.
