Can someone please explain how they can "flag" a book?

   Yesterday I had to buy a $100 book (French Impressionist Paintings) because I took it into the bookstore's bathroom with me. They're selling coffee, bran muffins, it's fucking entrapment. I tried to return it today when there was someone else working, but when she scanned it she says it's been flagged and I can't return it.
   
   There was a charity store near that I figure I'd donate it to (assuming there was some sort of write-off), but she immediately noticed it was "flagged" as well since she used to work in a bookstore. WTF? She didn't even scan it.
