We're all wasting our potential.

2018-01-17 at 8:12 AM UTCWhenever I hear someone say that, I always thought they just meant career or whatever, but I guess it applies to everything. For example, this could be an amazing, deep post that really explores the idea of potential but instead I'm gonna end it now.

You're wasting your potential to be a positive influence on others by ending this thread by trying to be deep -

2018-01-17 at 2:10 PM UTCIf your potential is unlimited, it can't be wasted. You can only waste something if there is a shortage of whatever it is. Let's say you had a tetra-zillion-gazzillion dollars. Would flushing a thousand hundred dollar bills down the toilet be wasteful? To someone else, yes. To you, no. So you can't really say you are wasting your potential, it's really that you are wasting someone else's benefit of your potential. Your potential is yours, and no one can take that away from you.

Now you’re just arguing the grammatical semanticalities of the phrase.
The meaning of the saying is that you are not using your unlimited potential to its full benefit, to yourself or others. -

wast·ed (wā′stĭd)
adj.
1. Not profitably used or maintained: a wasted inheritance.
2. Needless or superfluous: These are wasted words.
so you see ... wasting a something doesnt depend upon the exhaustability of the thing being wasted be they finite or infinite.
