Should I install Linux on my Trident 3?

I got a MSI Trident 3 with Oculus Rift but Windows is kind of shitty. I'm considering getting a SSD for it and installing Linux(I'm thinking Steam OS) but when I search the nets, I can't really find anyone that has done this.

    What would you suggest?

depends on what you intend to do with it

if it's just gayming, you're better off sticking with windows. if you want to try out lunix support dual booting is probably a better option given lunix VR support is still very new and general graphics hardware support will always be behind

Well, the problem is, Windows wont boot for some reason, and I don't know enough about Windows to get it running. It's a brand new system, so I found it strange that it wouldn't boot.

So I bought a 500GB HD, put inside the Trident, and installed Ubuntu. After installing the recommended Nvidia drivers, I got stuck in a login loop. So I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and now I'm back in.

I do have a problem with the screen not fitting as well and I've played with the settings on my television as well as display settings in Ubunutu. The whole screen is slightly to big.

It doesn't boot? Describe the boot sequence and how it fails. It should be giving you a STOP error code. What is it?

Ubuntu is working fine. Windows just freezes with black screen. I see no error code.

    Which version of Windows?

So you see the Windows loading screen and it does it's little animation and then BLACK SCREEN?

^No sir. I see the "MSI" boot screen, and then it's just black, no response. I think it's Windows 10.

In BIOS, is it configured for UEFI Secure Boot?

I turned Secure Boot off so that my NVidia drivers would work. Before I did that though, Windows would not boot, and Ubuntu would crash if I had NVidia drivers for my graphics.

Can you create a Windows 10 installation USB and try booting from it?

Once booted from the USB, please try the following:

    1. Click Repair This Computer
    2. Click Troubleshoot
    3. Click Advanced Options
    4. Click Command Prompt
    5. Type C:
    6. Type dir and verify you see the Windows, Users, and Program Files folders
    7. Type bootrec /fixboot and then Enter
    8. Type bootrec /fixmbr and then Enter
    9. Type bootrec /rebuildbcd and then Enter
    10. Type exit and then reboot your computer.

Does it now boot Windows? If not, there are a couple of others things we can try to get your Windows installation to boot before a Repair Install would be required.

I hate Windows. I'm not going to put that HD back in until I take my T3 apart again. That'll be in a while.
