Show me one example where prohibition works and people don't use drugs and are thus safer. As far as I'm concerned, all drug prohibition does is put a product into the hands of people who in any legal circumstances would not be permitted to conduct business. It's why opioid overdoses are up 500% in the last 10 years.
A government should first and foremost try to keep people safe. There is literally no possible way to both ban drugs and keep people safe from them. People need education and resources so they don't overdose, or develop an abscess, or contract HIV, or end up with heart problems or issues from neurotoxicity.
I've yet to see a program that can do these things under prohibition, but I have seen success with these things in cases where prohibition is more or less lifted. Like Denmark's heroin program or the various needle exchanges/shooting galleries that are gaining popularity here in the states. Regulation and education is a good thing.

Yeah alcohol is a pretty stupid drug. I pick weed and psychs any day. The only reason why I'm boozing at the moment is because my plug is in Miami and I'm all out of weed.

And prohibition doesn't work, specially when it's a drug like marijuana or mushrooms or alcohol. People have been making booze since the dawn of man. Any retard can make booze in their bathtub. It's not a difficult process. Sure some might fuck up and go blind but that's a risk people will take. All prohibition does is create shitty black markets and homebrews.
The way you delete a social ill is through education, taxation and competition. Plus, you defeat a good with superior competition. If the jedinited States of jedimerica legalized weed, with low taxes, and then reasonably taxed booze, I guaran-fucking-tee alcohol use, DUI accidents etc would drop like a rock. Ever driven high? It's hard to drive safe. Ever driven drunk? Shit's fucking legit impossible to do safely. And it only gets harder.

OPPOSITION TO THE USE OF PEYOTEby the Aztecs was strong among the Spanish conquerors. One
early Spanish church document likened the eating of peyote to cannibalism. Upset by the religious hold
that peyote had on the Indians, the Spanish tried, with great vigor but little success, to stamp out its use.
By 1720, the eating of peyote was prohibited throughout Mexico. But despite four centuries of civil and
ecclesiastical persecution, the use and importance of peyote have spread beyond its early limited
confines. Today it is so strongly anchored in native lore that even Christianized Indians believe that a
patron saint—El Santo Niño de Peyotl—walks on the hills where peyote grows.
There is continuing opposition in certain religious organizations in the United States to the Indians' use
of peyote as a ceremonial sacrament. Nevertheless, the federal government has never seriously
questioned or interfered with the practice since it is essentially a religious one. Those tribes living far from
sources of peyote—some as far north as Canada—can legally import mescal buttons by mail. Despite
constitutional guarantees separating church and state, however, a few states have enforced repressive
laws against even the religious use of peyote

SPANISH OPPOSITIONto the Aztecs' worship of pagan deities with the sacramental aid of mushrooms
was strong. Although the Spanish conquerors of Mexico hated and attacked the religious use of all
hallucinogens - peyote, ololiuqui, toloache, and others - teonanocatl was the target of special wrath. Their
religious fanaticism was drawn especially toward this despised and feared form of plant life that, through
its vision-giving powers, held the Indian in awe, allowing him to commune directly with his gods. The new
religion, Christianity, had nothing so attractive to offer him. Trying to stamp out the use of the
mushrooms, the Spaniards succeeded only in driving the custom into the hinterlands, where it persists
today. Not only did it persist, but the ritual adopted many Christian aspects, and the modern ritual is a
pagan-Christian blend.
