I've watched the first arc of the 2012 anime and the whole thing is just weird as shit. I can never tell if the random shit that's going on is supposed to be satire or serious. Like scenes are overplayed as fuck, the script is hammy as shit (although it kinda seems like no small parts of this is introduced in translation, it's hard to be sure though), the art style is like DBZ style muscle bound niggas with zero regard for physical realism but turned up to 11. I watched a scene where a floating decapitated head shot stabby tentacle things out of its eyes. But never once is there an in-universe reference to the fucking absurdity of this thing.

12 episodes in you would think you'd think if it was going to flip the script it would have. Does it ever get out of this noman's land of being too ridiculous to take seriously but too serious to be taken as comedy or is that the joke? Do people like this because it's funny or because they like the fight scenes or because they also can't tell why the fuck people like it?

I mean it's an interesting experience. I'm not sure I can recommend it but I can't really trash it either. I guess if I had to sum it up from what I've seen it's like the action of DBZ combined with the "what the fuck am I watching" of RahXephon

I like how Dio is just evil, like he's just a dick for seemingly no reason.

Yeah, he's kind of a refreshingly straight forward villain. Like it's suggested he's a product of a bad upbringing once or twice but it's quickly established he's irredeemable and just exists to fuck shit up.

the appeal is similar to FIst of the North Star. it's just fucking tight. and add the exploitables and shit on top of it and you got yourself a fun experience.
