As I've always said, it's not over until I say it's over. Do you not find it amusing how every single BBS-clone was blasted off the face of the Web, and yet this one is coasting along problem-free? Not even a ripple in the pond. Do you really think that is a coincidence? If you do, I have a golden bridge to sell you cheap.

I like the noise to signal comparison. I actually thought of something similar. The quality of information decreased while the quantity increased tenfold. Those 15 years in the 2000s hold more information than the 2000 years that came before them. I remember when it was a task to get on the internet, now it's impossible to get away from it. News, news, news, news.... All. The. Time. Global and privately. It's just too much input. I feel like we are at a critical point of evolution because if I look at the younger generations I feel like evolution didn't catch up fast enough. I barely have contact to people under 30 so my perception might be flawed but it seems like they are a different breed. My grandfather walked back home from Russia after fighting in WWII but he never had to put up with a single stupid Facebook post or a viral video otherwise he would have probably shot himself the moment they handed him the gun. Ya feel me?

Bottom line is, it all boils down to the userbase. "Build it and they will come" didn't work for RDFRN. I don't think a single new user joined that site. The Admin dude really hoped for an academic userbase but I told him back then that people who publish relevant stuff for free do not exist. Not in this day and age. Not on a niche website with junkies and pedophiles. I for one only and exlusively shitpost because it is a hobby that distracts me from my life. The e-dick stroking I get from people liking my posts/talking about and sharing my ideas isn't worth my time anymore because in the end it doesn't pay the bills. Also, my ideas are mostly shit but fuck you, ok?

A lot of things don't pay the bills. Did it pay the bills to run a BBS? Back when a BBS setup cost upwards of 5000+$ 1985's dollars (worth 11013.80$ of today's dollars). Do you think the userbase became washed out? Or did those people move onto other things like hackerspaces or something else?

I've been on dozens of different forums for about 15 years now(low-life lol), and I've learned that people usually eventually move on to other things in life(getting married and having kids, getting busy with school and making new friends, etc). It's not always that they move onto another forum/community. And then of course there are those that get incarcerated, die, or whatever. It does seem like lot of people post a lot while in school(middle - college) and then stop once they find a job.

Long term internet people are those that are more into technology. You'll see these people around longer and when they do disappear, they are usually not to far.

True, I can see that happening. But what about fresh blood? Don't tell me "kids these days aint curious no more" cause I won't believe that.

In all instances, certain deluded individuals with big egos started to think they were too big for their britches…

You realize you're talking about yourself, right? And that you've killed every clone thus far?

Kids these days are one generation closer to total domestication. They will grow up playing with the same toys their whole lives, watching cartoons their whole lives... no, they're not as curious as the days in which you could learn and be distracted, as opposed to today's "learn or be distracted". Distractions are a way of life now.

Now if you'll excuse me I've got 8 anime shows currently on-going and I need to play some Fallout 4.

I just remembered about rorta. I wonder if it still exists? It was a small town compared to totse, but very similar in ideology.

I just checked. Well. That place is more dead than a the norse gods.

So here's my perspective on what would have to happen to run a successful forum like the one we're talking about.

First and foremost, You guys need to stop looking to ressurect totse and seeing totse in every idea. Part of growing up is letting go of some things you may have loved, but for god's sakes it's getting embarrassing. Accept it for what it is.

You'd need one guy running the place and people who will respect his rules. He has to have enough time to dedicate to the site.

You'd need a few mods that are at least on the same page as the one guy running the place.

You'll need a niche market that hasn't been totally capitalized upon and is relatively unexplored forum-wise.

You'll need a way to close registration for a period.

You'll need to do an advertising campaign.

    And that, there's aways luck.

Here's how I would do it and what I was thinking about earlier in the thread.

I would build a forum dedicated to the discussion of Academic topics. The mission statement of the forum would be:

"Nerdsinspace exists to foster a community of genuine academic discussion where integrity, good scholarship, and academic liberty are emphasized. "

To clarify on what I mean by this since there appears to be confusion on the term "academic" (as in thinking RDFRN or Totse were academic forums), the forum would have some pretty strict guidelines. Scholarly sources and citations would be emphasized. Posts have to deal with a topic directly relating to a field of study. Posts that are irrelevant would be deleted or locked. Here are examples of acceptable topics are:

Can someone help me with this math equation?

Is Paedophilia a modern day witch-hunt? What does the science say?

Was Freud actually right about anything?

Can someone help me with this script I'm writing to connect to Xfinity Wifi and spoof my MAC address?

Does Charles Murray's research actually count as "racist science" or are there biological differences between races?

    Paranormal Psychology Thread.

What's the most interesting class you've ever taken?

    Marx and Wittgenstein.

Is there room for god in science?

In each example, there is an actual field of study highlighted in each topic. Here's what's not acceptable:

    Obama is fucking gay.

Another reason I hate niggers, kikes, muslims and faggots.

    Fuck you.

What should I do with my piss balloons?

I want to steal some dude's shit / eat drywall nails / Night Ops

    The jedis control everything.

I ate an awesome cheese burger today.

I broke up with my girlfriend.

Check out this sexy girl / guy / child / elephant

    The Porn Thread

I wish I had the balls to hire a hooker.

Why did oplus delete my thread? He's just a power hungry mod who needs control. He has to push buttons. It's not over until I say it over. The forum is doomed because it's just like totse.

In each unacceptable example, the topics don't really have anything to do directly with an academic discipline. Even if they're loosely related, they aren't written in a way that contributes to fostering genuine academic discussion.

You'll note that freedom is a not a core principle. The reason is because this has nothing to do with totse.

Okay that sounds kinda nerdy but feasible. My question is how are you going to attract a userbase of people who want to do this and follow the rules? How will you keep shit posting down?

I have an idea. I'm not guaranteeing it'll work, but it operates on a lot of principles that I know to be true.

Long story short, the answer is the Wargames Sub.

After we put up the site and advertise it in a few locations (4chan, reddit, whatever), A select few of you guys would be invited to a War Games sub. We leave registration open for a little bit, wait until we get a core group of a few people (we don't need a lot, a few are fine). We start by designing how we want our first war game to be. The first one It could be really basic, like connecting to a computer on my network and doxing "me" (fake information). The goal is to get a small group of people working together so everyone can supplement everyone else's knowledge and we can all work together on the stuff we don't know in order to build a better learning experience. When it gets a little bigger, we could have teams and target servers on either team.

Whenever we create a campaign, we close registration. Then we spend a 1 - 3 months executing the campaign. You can still view the page but you can't register. People will see it, be interested, want to learn, and will join whenever registration is open.

The other thing is that we'll probably only have one or two subs. The forum is so small that it'll look really inactive if we have a million different subs.

I'm building a computer lab in my house as we speak, and I would be willing to get a unique connection and unique IP address specifically for these exercises. I'm going to school full time and am working a lot less so I'll have time to dedicate to this bullshit. Furthermore I'm going to school in a tech field so it's related to my education and I can ergo justify it.

That's my idea. I don't know what you guys think but I'm pretty confident it would work. I don't think it would attract a ton of people right away but you wouldn't want that to start. You'd want basically a select few guys who are knowledgable enough to execute this but not so advanced they blow everyone else away. It's very doable and, if the right people were in charge, you could wind up making something very successful.

It's not about Totse itself, it's about the spirit of Totse and all it stood for. That's the point. The spirit of the temple still lives.

I mean that's kind of melodramatic.

It's not like the first time people got together dedicated to the idea of freedom and sharing knolwedge was in the 1980s man.

It had a big influence on me but a lot of you guys are honestly starting to sound like you're part of an organized religion. A large part of the nostalgia is simply the fact a lot of us were younger when we found it.

I agree with this but social studies have shown that there is never only one extreme. I think "learn or be distracted" is very true. The distracted ones = shitposters who don't give a fuck. The ones who learn = No fun allowed fuck faggots. The middle disappears more and more in all sectors.

Liquidice, I don't think the kids these days are not interested anymore. I just believe that they are fully occupied by trying to be ahead of the curve. I don't know, man. If it's not a free spirited website for weirdos that allowes stuff others don't or a super strict academic forum that doesn't put up with shit at all then.. well, maybe it would find its place for just the right group of people. There are probably a shitton of small forums like that already, though.

Actually, yes, it was. At least on an electronic platform. Totse was the very first of its kind. There were a few others, but they all followed in Totse's footsteps. Guess you just had to have been there.

Lol, I was on NirvanaNet back when that shit was a dial in BBS. Acting like I" just had to of been there" is laughable.

And no, it wasn't the first time or only time people did this. Even in the mid 2000s there were better groups than Totse (like thefreeinformationsociety) but they weren't as popular - which served their purpose because it wasn't filled with shitposting, people fucking burritos, and all the other stuff that obscures this lofty notion of what you guys seem to think Totse is or was. I'm not saying you can't have fun, but some of you guys act seriously are making Totse out to be a religion.

It was a great community and we had some good times, but by the mid 2000s there was nothing spectacular about it, which is why it got closed.

You need to put down the Kool Aid man.

Holy shit, that brings back memories. I wasn't active in that community at all, but I was one of those daily lurkers and I spent weeks exploring their archives. Man, remember warweed's site? How about Quentinz? Or The Militia? If only I had the willpower then that I have now - I couldve learnt everything and built everything.

You're right about the religion part tho.

Risir, I dunno, I don't have a lot of contact with younger people. I just theorize that because theyre growing up in a more colorful world, it's harder for them to discern between certain things, between trash and knowledge, n stuff. This probably just sounds like old-geezer talk though.
