Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities, usually involving imaginative or technical skill. In their most general form these activities include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art. This article focuses primarily on the visual arts, which includes the creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential—in a way that they usually are not in a painting, for example. Music, theatre, film, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature and other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition of art or the arts.[1] Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. In modern usage after the 17th century, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and distinguished from acquired skills in general, such as the decorative or applied arts.

Smooth linework takes a lot of practice, whether it is done digitally or not. When doing digital linework, it may help to play with the various smoothness parameters, like available in Flash. When pencilling, you may want to practice feathering, treating a line as a shape, filling it in with a really fine pencil (.3 mm). I know quite a number of people who cannot possibly do this digitally, and stick to good old pencil. Whichever you choose: it takes practice...

The work shouldn’t be considered complete until you do the following with the physical piece.
    • Sign it!
Sign your art wherever you can, and however you do it best.
    • Add the date on the front, back, or underneath – where and when it’s appropriate for your medium.
Many artists don’t like to date their work on the front because it doesn’t look as fresh. That’s fine, but date it somewhere. Dating is a way that helps you claim credit for copyright and will be used by the curator that mounts a retrospective of your work in 30 years.
    • If appropriate for your medium, make an identification card for the back that includes the complete credit line: Name, title, media, dimensions, and price.
This is enormously helpful for venues.

To choose between the function and quality of a paper isn't easy. Sometimes you'll find a paper that you really want to work with, but in the end you realize that if you choose it, the production cost will go up significantly. This is usually just a concern when you work with a bigger production and need a lot of paper, then the price will escalate quickly. But even smaller projects can have problems with cost, especially if you choose unusual inks or post processing methods. So choosing a paper that's cheap, but still good for your product, can be tricky.

Laid paper has a pattern of parallel lines created by the wires of the mould in its production. Some papers, such as Ingres, have a broad, pronounced surface texture which is clearly visible in the drawing. Some laid papers have a finer texture. It's important to choose a scale of texture which is appropriate to your style of drawing - a finer scale texture for smaller work. This type of paper is suitable for sketching with pastel, charcoal and soft pencil. Brands include Canson Ingres, Hahnemühle Ingres, Hahnemühle Bugra Pastel Paper, and Strathmore 500 Series Charcoal Paper.
