Psychological Effects Of Social Isolation

What are the effects of social isolation on a middle aged person? I tried doing a Google search but could only find info on social isolation on elderly people. I'm referring to people that live within society, but have no close relationships with other people. So the person can see others with relationships but knows that he/she has been rejected.

Not just for a short time. I'm talking about for decades, or a whole life. Like a person that has no family, no fiends, no one to talk to about their problems, for decades. Not just someone that doesn't have any social connections for like a few months.

I always hear people say shit like "I'm lonely." but they have family and friends, so they can't be that lonely. And if they don't, it's only for a really shot time period, like a few months.

The quality of life life is obviously going to be reduced, but what would be the psychological effect of going 10+ years and not haing any real relationships at all what-so-ever?

Its pretty evident that constant isolation can be extremely defeating and exacerbate a range of negative emotions that most others would likely never experience. Prisons' solitary confinement serves as a perfect example that prolonged isolation is considered one of the most debilitating punishments there are. Still even then the prisoners have daily contact with at least one or two guards, but in the free world severe isolation can much longer than that and can be considered more punishing than prison.

they're differences between forced isolation and voluntary isolations.

    voluntary isolations are meditational.

Yes moving to a cabin to get shit-clock drunk and closer to mother nature and the birds is nice but I am of course referring to individuals whose isolation may appear to be voluntary but more or less is not due to psychological mindfuckery and an increasing detachment from reality which they may or may not be aware of but still affects them the same.

same thing. the difference in outcome is how you choose to take it.

Not when you lose the ability to feel you have that choice.

Since you seem to be talking about yourself again, why don't you tell us how it's affected you?

Well, there are certain things I won't talk about, but I'm not really sure how it's affected me. I think two things stick out for sure though. One is positive for me(in a way) and negative for anyone that falls prey to me, and the other is negative for me and is only positive for those that don't like me and wish me harm.

I know that I am able to do things that I always said I wouldn't do. I always thought that shoplifting was okay because it was stealing from large companies that can afford it, but stealing from an individual was bad because it would likely affect them, but now I can do whatever I want to people because I can't imagine if they were someone I know(due to not knowing anyone). On this level, I do feel free, like I am able to do whatever is needed to survive and even thrive. But this is slowly evolving as time goes by.

I know that I have no way to vent my emotions positively. They go in circles in my head unless I choose to vent them onto the world in some negative way(which is only occasionally and at first I didn't know why I was doing some of the things but since then I have realized and been able to control it. Although I should just let it flow as that would be healthier). I've learned that exercise does not vent negative emotions and stress, but it does make me feel better. Feeling better by exercising and other forms of self-improvement only delay/mask stress and emotions.

    That's all for now.

not wanting to choose is an acquired ability. people who dont have a choice adept by learning to not choose to cope.

like if i snap my fingers and make you bleed from your genitals once every full moon for 3 nites, you'd be traumatized.

but not women. they're at peace with this phenomenon and accepted it as a way of life. so can permanent isolation.
