I don't think I've misunderstood anything, it's totally reasonable to believe that there is more than one reason for people wanting to go to Mars. I don't doubt that a lot of people are interested in it purely to exploit its resources, but that doesn't mean that there also isn't a group of people who are interested in going for any other hundreds of reasons. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
