How do you keep yourself from becoming absolutely obsessed with all that is going wrong in the world

If fusion works out we'll be a post-scarcity society. Just wait a little, when you're a post scarcity society you can piss away anything you want. -

Saying it doesn't matter because I'll be dead is a total cop out. You're totally swerving around my point. Just be honest dude. -

It'd take a fuck up of proportions we have evidence for occurring multiple times throughout history.
Yes except your data set doesn't contain any samples for "mass extinction event caused by humanity". -

It kind of does - I remember reading a while back that species today are going extinct at a rate similar to those we believe the planet experienced in previous mass extinction events. What if we are become death, destroyers of worlds? -

By definition you can't have something that moves faster than light speed, as the energy required to accelerate it approaches infinity. Even if you wanted to try, the fuel required, even if perfectly efficient matter-anti-matter annihilation would be infinitely massive.
FTL of any sort of assumes some sort of teleportation or similar rule-bending technology. I think there's any doubt that FTL is possible, as we have lots of evidence of aliens visiting earth.

At 0.33c you don't even really have relativistic effects. You could achieve the same effect by accelerating about a quarter a cubic meter of steel to 0.9999999999999 c. -

I definitely understand curiosity about space and the unknown, and I think that goal is admirable, but really we should be occupying earth. We're not fixing any of humanity's problems by becoming electrical engineers and helping design and make weapons. Going to mars isn't a good thing for humanity in that regard, it's trying to sweep the problem under the rug. We don't need another planet to destroy, we need to stop taking our consciousness for granted and acting like fucking primates and burning through our planet and resources. It's seriously the biggest slap in the face of evolution, we are given consciousness and the ability to reason and do things better but as a species we're just like "fuck it, let's keep acting uncivilized and fucking everything up, we can just get a new planet when we fuck this one up."
While at the same time we are playing russian roulette with whether we're even going to be able to get off this rock before we destroy it to the point where we literally all die. It's fucking bizarre man.
na, see you've seriously misunderstood. that whole man going to live on mars story is just some bullshit they feed the little man so he won't whinge and moan about tax dollars being spent on space exploration. the only fucking reason men are going to mars is for mining. mars is completely uninhabitable. once all the technology has been discovered(using tax dollars), then the private corporations will take over and start bringing back minerals and shit. but you can bet your life they won't be giving it away in return for all those tax dollars that were spent on making it possible for them to get there in the first fucking place.

99.999% of the species that ever lived are now extinct. that's just part of natural selection, its how it works.

I just don't give a fuck. I don't read "headline news", I don't watch the news. The only reason I even know what is happening is because of my local TV station that I play during the morning as I get ready for work. They report anything major. Besides that, fuck it. I used to try and keep up with everything and everyone and immerse myself in a bunch of global political nonsense. It's all bullshit, man. Just stop giving a fuck and free yourself. -

I don't think I've misunderstood anything, it's totally reasonable to believe that there is more than one reason for people wanting to go to Mars. I don't doubt that a lot of people are interested in it purely to exploit its resources, but that doesn't mean that there also isn't a group of people who are interested in going for any other hundreds of reasons. The two aren't mutually exclusive. -

like what reason? there's nothing there. you'd spend your entire life living in pretty much a glorified tent. can you imagine how boring it would be?

I agree, it would fucking suck, but that doesn't mean there aren't lots of people who wouldn't do it. I bet there's probably some hella thirsty dudes who haven't been laid in 10 years who would go just because they think they'll get to have sex if enclosed in a confined space with a female for so long. -
2017-11-13 at 12:25 AM UTCI have just one question. Is Mars suitable for meth manufacturing?
