If you want to make the case that worshiping Christ in and of itself is idol worship, then okay…? That doesn't really make sense. Christ is God, so the commandment "have no other Gods before me" wouldn't be broken anyway.

Well, for one, know that not all of the laws of the Old Testament are applicable today after Jesus died on the cross, thus fulfilling the law. That's why we can eat bacon, work seven days a week, etc.
Regarding this passage though, the cross is not a graven image of Christ. Perhaps you're thinking of a crucifix which is a figure that has Jesus on the cross. Still, even then, NO ONE WORSHIPS THE CROSS. Christians worship God, and use crosses as a reminder of what was done for us. What about this do you not understand?

We humble ourselves before Christ and pray to him - not. the. cross. If you enter a Christian church you will not hear "Dear Cross, forgive me for I have sinned."
Actually, do you know why Christ's crucifixion was so important? Perhaps you'd understand better if you knew the meaning behind the symbolic use of the cross. -

Christians, regardless of specialty or denomination, are not supposed to worship idols/relics, per the Word of God. If some do it anyway, well, that's what we call sin, and it isn't exactly a new phenomenon. -

this was simular to false religions of the past which older religions would castrate themselves to show their loyalty to the Gods. (Without having to actually castrate.. though some of the first Priest may have)
then they turned to stone idolizing. placing their hands on statues of Jesus and other idols to make them feel closer to God. (Though shalt not worship stone images of me)
Then they started to worship Mary.
This is when someone like Martin Luther formed the day of Reformation against the catholic church. Was burned at a stake and started the Protestant Church's to follow. going back to basics of Christian fundamentals. which they all went off on their own form of what the original doctrine may have said. this also followed the outlaw of owning a bible and that only Catholic Priest could possess them. anyone found with a bible and not a priest was probably punish very harshly for it. -
