Yes because of the church. Also, having sex before marriage used to be a sin in Catholicism i think. It's not exactly canon but the sin of fornication was a thing. So if you had abstained you were innocent of that particular sin.

I disagree, if someone slaps you in the face do you go: Well, there's no right and wrong anyway so i don't care. And then walk away?
