I wanted this thread to cover all forms of media but wasn't sure where to post it, so here we are.
What is your favorite sci-fi film/show/book/videogame?
Lately I have been thinking about playing Mass Effect again. The codex made that universe so fucking immersive. All the different information about alien biology and atmosphere and how that effected their species. Like the Quarians for example, they have no immune system because predatory life never evolved on their planet. Or the elcor, whose home planet has gravity many times higher than other planets and thus they evolved with very slow and precise movements so as not to hurt themselves by falling.
As far as books, I really liked the Neanderthal Parallax series. It's about two separate universes. One where homo sapiens became the dominant species, and one where homo neanderthalensis became the dominant species. The homo sapien world (as you can guess) is just our world, but in the neanderthal universe they evolved differently. Their population is counted in the millions, not the billions, which is reasoned by the fact that they were thought to be less social than homo sapiens, as evidenced by their smaller tribe sizes. With these smaller numbers, they weren't able to kill off some of the megafuana that we did (such as wooly mammoths.)
Their wars were a lot smaller and a lot deadlier given their strength. I believe their biggest war killed some 8,000 people and they thought it was a huge number and were astonished to hear of our WWII tolls. Don't think I ever finished the trilogy because I just stole the pdf and never read the paper book (hate reading off a laptop) but what I read was pretty phenomenal. There's a lot of quantum-physics type stuff too but I'm more interested in the anthropological aspect of the series. Maybe some of you will appreciate that side more.
Movies/tv? Eh. I've been watching Star Trek TNG but it's not very heavy on the sci-fi aspect I don't think, though a lot of the plots are based on that sort of thing. I'm kind of lost as far as this goes though, maybe some of you can make suggestions. -

Have you ever heard of "the metamorphosis of prime intellect"? It's actually a fairly weird and poorly written short story but there a few ideas in there that I really really like.
Ever hear about VALIS, the vast active living intelligence system? I really like this concept. Never read the book, but I really really like the idea of VALIS.
I enjoyed 2001: A space odyssey, and more recently Interstellar.
Obviously I like to think about reality and what it is and what it could be, what we are and what our future will become. I feel like science fiction is a great avenue for speculation on that sort of thing. -

2017-10-26 at 1:06 AM UTChaven't watched much lately, Sunshine is one of my favourite films. Its real value is in psychology and cinematography though, not specific sci-fi themes so I dunno if it'd interest you.

I feel like it is a lot of times shoehorned in when sci-fi tries to make things all existential/philosophical. It works when it's about something like AI or virtual realities and the thought occurs naturally, but 2001: A Space Odyssey for example relies entirely on weird scenes. I honestly don't get how anybody likes that movies. It's way too long for what it is. I just wanted to stick with HAL, not go on some psychedelic journey.
What did you like about Interstellar? I haven't seen it. I watched Ex Machina recently though. I thought it did a good job exploring the concept of realistic AI in a very intimate way since there are only three main characters. It's about as sci-fi as space UN though. -

I read most of The Caves of Steel while I was in jail. I got out before I finished, but I was like 3/4 of the way through, and it was really good. -

I just looked up the premise, sounds interesting but not my cup of tea. Not for how DRY this nigga is. I'm gonna be ordering books soon so maybe I buy anyway -

I also don't really like the ending of 2001, it is too... open to interpretation, I guess? I do really like everything up to that part of the movie, I really enjoy this style of film, the long deliberate takes, the perfect musical score. I suppose what I like most about it is the idea that there was something driving mankind towards a particular goal, something advanced and super human guiding us along towards a fate that we currently are unable to comprehend ... I suppose that's one way of interpreting it anyway.
As for interstellar, really it's the same sort of thing. I mean there are a lot of little things I really liked about it, like the robots that looked sort of like monoliths. But again in this movie there is the idea of these advanced being guiding us towards ... something. Towards a higher state of existence I guess. And that really, they are us and we are them, or will become them. I don't want to ruin it for you if you haven't seen it.
