    Right but he is in Fagro North Dakota and I'm in Clearwater Florida. I don't even use a real VPN, I just use a home VPN to protect myself on public hotspots and shit and route traffic through my RPi at home. I am having an existential crisis now.

    I would guess you have the same carrier. It's not unheard of to route an IP connection over a cellular network through pretty remote gateways depending on network condition.

    some, a lot here, use upstream proxies - partially to be able to cache resources and reduce network load, and partially to control the protocols that are available on the 3G/4G nezzwerks
