CNC Mill Conversion

2016-09-12 at 4:04 AM UTCI bought a Proxxon MF70 a while back (link), it's surprisingly high quality but also has an unfortunately small range of movement. I'm considering building an extension to the milling bench or just buying a larger one and mounting it, but that's for another time.
I'm planning on converting the machine to CNC; I've bought some basic mounting plates for NEMA17-sized motors (link, pretty good quality, tight fit/low clearance etc) and am now deciding on a controller.
I'm currently looking at this motor/controller/driver/psu kit, thhough to be honest I've done fucktonnes of reading on diy forums and am still not sure exactly what to look for. I'm aware I can use an arduino for a controller and shields/daughterboards for drivers, but as I haven't done this before I'm afraid of damaging parts through over/undervolting it and I'm not sure all the diy parts together will come to much less than the $200-300 asking price for full kits on ebay.
I know it's a long shot but I'm curious if anyone here's done similar and has advice. -
2016-09-12 at 7:02 AM UTCWish I could be more helpful. Looked into DIY cnc machines but they were 1. too expensive and 2. to limited. What you have set up seems like a solid start for what you are planning on converting. Good luck and keep us updated so at the least I learn something.

2016-09-12 at 9:23 PM UTCwhy didnt u just buy a decent pillar drill and a axis vice u fucing retard
i wudnt feel safe cutting a block of pollen wt that shit lmao -
2016-09-13 at 12:06 AM UTCa drill press is not designed to handle the lateral forces of horizontal cutting, best case it cuts inaccurately, worst case you fuck the motor up like I said, the MF70 is surprisingly capable, I've cut all sorts of things up to annealed steel (plastics, varying thicknesses of aluminium and carbon fibre up to billets of 'damascus' steel)

2016-10-01 at 5:04 AM UTCI've been reading up on CNC lately and wanted to build a 3D printer but it never really went anywhere. I did buy some Nema17 motors and drivers but I'm not sure if those would be fit
