   it's like in auto suggest thing. It builds up a list of all the users that have what you typed as a substring of their username, and then displays the 7 of them with the highest post count. There are better contact-selection heuristics but this one was easy and turns out to work reasonably well given the nature of the community (everyone knows everyone pretty much, if you want to send someone a PM they're almost certainly a regular poster) and you can do it quickly given the existing index structure. Since the empty string is a substring of everyone's username if you don't type anything you just get a list of the highest post count users.
