This. Ive only heard unsuccessful people tell me to work smarter not harder. I would think it be best practice to maximize ability by working hard and smart. -

Reads a bit like a nuttier version Russell's In Praise of Idleness, which is something I've probably spammed here a couple of times but I think is a really common sense, simple essay on something that's surprisingly controversial. -

Ha, good comparison.
I don't, however, agree on stuff from In Praise of Idleness being common sense. The idea and writing is simple, yes, but how many people think about it or act on it? I know of just a handful. -
2016-01-19 at 6:55 AM UTCI think this idea is stupid. Usually people who tell me to "work smart" are the ones who are my co-workers at minimum wage jobs. They wonder why they never get the position that pays 25 cents more and they won't shut up about it. The fact is, they're lazy and don't want to work. Which is fine. But if you want to get anywhere in life, you have to work hard. I'm lazy, but when I work, I work hard. I work my ass off. I don't care if I'm working harder than my paygrade- to me it's a thing of principal. Being a hard worker is a desirable trait, it's honorable, it feels good at the end of the day to kick your feet up, pop open a beer and relax after working hard.
My last job I worked at a fucking grocery store. When I quit, they called me back twice offering me a better position. I quit for numerous reasons, none of them very respectable to be honest but I did work really fucking hard there even though I only worked there for a few months. The only thing I had to show for it was more hours than my co-workers (I was getting usually 35 hours a week where my coworkers were fighting for 25). I could have become manager at that place if I kept it up but a grocery store is no future and it's really not worth putting in years just so you can tell other people to do the same shit you used to do.
Work hard AND work smart. Working smart doesn't mean working lazy. It means showing initiative, moving ahead. Getting your work done without having to be micromanaged. Doing things without being asked. Doing things right.
