2017-08-01 at 12:28 AM UTCWhat are you thoughts on rare animal conservation? Do you think the amount of money spent to keep certain species from going extinct is worth it?

I think it can pay for itself, if only we are willing to not be scumbags, and actually figure out optimal ways to do it.
Let's take, for example, rhinos. People in charge of game reserves sell hunting tags for old and infertile rhinos who kill younger, fertile males and are aggressive. These hunting tags can go for over $50,000 apiece, and all of that goes back towards conservation efforts.
So I am actually very much in favour of animal conservation, but we need to find better solutions, which are sustainable and long lasting.
Let me give you another example; apparently the giant tortoise tastes absolutely delicious. They were so delicious that the Royal Society had a hard time getting their hands on one and actually classifying it, because the expeditions kept eating them on the way back to England!
Thinking what I'm thinking? We should find a way to farm them. Obviously it's difficult, and would probably take a long time to set up the appropriate systems and supply chains for it to be profitable, but if we start today, I can see that being a real possibility. Their numbers would soar and we could release XYZ amounts into the wild each year or something I guess, just by setting it up so it can be either profitable, or eat most of its own costs.
That's just an example, but I really think the way to go, is to find ways to make it convenient and profitable for us not to fuck with the animals and environment. That's where some of our brightest engineers should be focusing IMO, I see money and genuine good in it. -

2017-08-01 at 12:53 AM UTCIf we're unable to have conservation effectively pay for itself, is it still worth it? There are clearly many many extinct species now, do you think we'd be better off if more effort had been spent in sustaining them, if they were all alive and well today?

no it wouldn't be worth it because we would die -

You would die. You, personally, would die. I can tell that. So I can understand why you'd answer that why, it seems, you don't want to be dead, for any number of reasons, so I will accept your answer on a personal level, biased, and selfish. -

My #1 priority is humanity's wellbeing so it's hard to say whether or not animal conservation is worth it for sure. But we don't know is how the planet will deal with certain species going extinct, or is going all out.
So to be careful, sure, I think it's a good idea to keep as many of these critters around as possible. But we're still kicking nowadays so I don't think those dead animals were too important. However, I'd rather they existed than not, so I do wish more ffort had been put into conserving them. -

wat
im bullshitting, but i do know that ecosystems provide many services to humans and if we dont take care of them, like balancing biodiversity, we will fuck ourselves
i have no idea
id think creating our own food ecosystems would be a lot more laborious and expensive than trying to maintain what we have been given already
ever hear about those dudes that have to pollinate each individual apple blossom because all the bees died? doesnt that sound awful? -

the more animals we have means we have more resources to teach children about taking care of the environment

that was mean for almost no reason i can fathom -

so am I m8lyn
So it depends on the species. Is there a good reason to have kept the DoDo bird around? Did they provide anything for our ecosystem? Bees are cool, I think the bees you're talking about are coming back. -
2017-08-01 at 1:11 AM UTCbeing involved in environmental restoration does more than just help the animals and plants, it teaches kids to be more responsible and actually learn about how to take care of our world which means PROTECTING biodiversity
its also fun if you like bunnies and getting muddy
ecosystems have huge money value and if we don't take care of them we're going to be at a loss when we have to make some artificial shit to survive -

1 & only reason to keep the baby dodo around
WE COULD HAVE TAMED THEM AND MADE AWESOME DODO PETS THAT FETCH OUR MAIL
are you thinking straight?
they also probably had some part in balancing their local plant, insect and bug populations which is important for the health of an ecosystem -
2017-08-01 at 1:14 AM UTCDo you think dinosaurs and humans could co-exist?
