bias and magical beliefs

  1. #1
I've always been pretty interested in philosophy and pondering on the nature of existence and reality, and over the years I think I've become more and more open minded and able to view things from a progressively more objective manner. I've always just assumed it to be the case that the closer you are to knowing the truth, the better off you are. But lately I've been thinking that this sort of thinking is a waste of time.

Because the vast majority of humanity thrives on bias and magical beliefs. They believe things without ever second guessing them, because they have no practical need to. Even if their beliefs are radically incorrect, it may still be benefit or have a neutral effect on the people in question. If a lot of people share your dumb belief, you can get any form of support you need to continue to hold those beliefs from those people.

Politics and religion are the obvious examples. Many lefties and righties and religious people fundamentally believe in their system. If you could provide them with undeniable evidence that their position is wrong, they would still believe it, because the rationale isn't important, the belief itself and the sense of identity it provides is. This pretty much means that debate on these subjects is absolutely useless and basically just a more "mature mainstream adult" approach to the drama that highschoolers and soap opera watchers engage in. But these kinds of debates are what society does. People without some sort of magical belief are commonly looked at as unintelligent or boring, while people with fiery, irrational beliefs get attention and praise. Thus ignorance is rewarded while thinking is discouraged.

Also, magical beliefs can give people an advantage in life personally. I've been talking lately to some people who are your typical fundamental christian conservatives. They all believe that there is a god that has a purpose for their life, and regardless of the fact that this is obviously bs, it gives them a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I lack.

So whats the point of it all? There is no point in trying to know the truth or be fair or thinking about things. I may as well just resign myself to being benzo'd and happy all the time. It's essentially the same thing everyone else is doing, just replacing bullshit with drugs.

It's not a waste of time. Some find joy and purpose in trying to be unbiased, fair-minded or whatever you want to call it and those people are admirable. Passion in the face of meaninglessness is irrational or "magical" yet that passion is what brings great change for us all. Where is your passion? Positive social reform wouldn't be occurring without progressive people who have passion. Sure, there isn't any one true objective to life, but you can certainly make an educated guess and work with it based on the world around you and your personal capabilities.

You can feel and see meth but you can't see or feel God /thread. Naw but in all seriousness I sort of agree arguing the intangible eventually is a waste of time. "Beating a dead horse" comes to mind as a good analogy for this. To further prove your point and make myself look stupid I do belief there is some way to(probably) sell your soul or do something horrific enough to acquire something supernaturally fast that was otherwise literally unobtainable otherwise. One could argue an immeasurable amount of willpower and motivation could do the same or that they are one in the same in a sense.

If you've seen "Limitless" a huge theory is the "clear pill" was in fact nothing more than a placebo the belief that taking this magical pill was enough to turn one into a over 9,000 level grand wizard in every aspect of your life was enough to in fact make it true. Dare to take the clear pill fam? If so...just put $800 in my hand.

Good fred idea. Im a philosopher as well. I consider myself religious but not in the fundamental conservative religious way. Im against churches and other kinds of cults. But im naturally way outside of the mainstream so ive just never been into that collectivism.

I have talked to my gf about stuff like this im well aware to an extent that she thinks im crazy and she knows that i think that shes kind of a "normal fag" but we meet in the middle and i like how even though we ate both extremely different people how we are willing to accept each other for what we are.

But in the end we all fundamentally stand alone and you are your own god.

And thats why im against cults because it becomes a circle jerk of mass hypnosis

I just go by what I've seen in my own life and in others, and not saying that I'm perfect by any means, but growing up I started church late so I already kind of thought it was bs about the vibe of the people there, and I'd pay attention to the message which I think for the most part is true, but its in one ear and out of the other I noticed from the adults.

My dad is an ordained minister and does a lot for his church, and he's cool and calm now these, more power to him, I don't diss him for it because I see that it makes him happy and he actually has done a lot of things for his church.

He will talk about how he wants to visit Israel because thats where jesus was born, and I don't argue with him because I've known him well enough since i was a baby that he will think that but isn't coming from a "bad/hateful place" with his rhetoric. I'll let it slide just so we can go occasionally eat a chili dog or something because he's good to talk to.

But maybe I'm wrong but thats kind of what I thought GP was getting at about how it can benefit yourself, or be neutral, hell even devilish =)

I've done 62 weeks of anger mgmt but was ordered 8 more from an incident back in january where i had an incident with a co-worker at goodwill. And I have a class that a dyke teaches with women in the class. But I'm digressing.

But because I'm "dr Bill Krozby, phd in fundamentalism" and im in a "low-risk" class as opposed to the wife beating class I used to be in.

I "fundamentally" through in a "derpadew" and "time bomb tacticts" into the conversation when know one would speak up because they are shy lil pussies so we got out an hour early

well that's bullshit coz the russian mafia dude first took the clear pill not knowing what the fuck it was. he thought it would just get him high, but went off and found the potential it gave him. that's why he came back demanding more so badly. if it was just a placebo it would not have done that, at best he might of imagined being a little buzzed off it, but there's no way he would have gotten the same effects as bradley coopers character did.

Yeah I totally forgot about that dude. He was still evil as shit on it too. Pretty good movie though. There's a series on Netflix that kinda/sorta picks up where the movie left off I started watching it last winter it seemed promising too I just got distracted with other things at the time. I'd say it's probably worth a watch though from the few episodes I started on.
