How do use the Dial Rotary-Phone

  15. People would put a little lock on the rotary dial to prevent people from using their phone, but you could just tap the hang up pins in the cradle to dial a number regardless. One tap was the number 1, two taps was the number two, and so on, with 10 taps being the 0.

You had to do it in a rotary speed or sometimes it wouldn't work

but I did that and learned to do all the tones when we got tone or push button phone.

never tried the Capt Crunch whistle. i bet they're collector items now for geeks
  17. It was fun when they had party lines. You had anywhere from 4-10 customers all using the one line, so each customer on the shared line had a special ring, but if you grabbed the phone quick and answered it before the entire ring could come through, you could pretend to be the person they were trying to reach. It would sometimes take them 10 minutes before they realized they were talking to a stranger.

It was a Bell system where a bunch of people would share the same telephone line and each person had a different ring. So the guy across the street would receive his calls that came in with two short rings, the guy at the end of the street would receive calls that came in with two long rings, the guy on the next street over would receive his call with a short ring and a long ring, and so forth. However, anyone on the line could pick up on anyone else's rings, or just pick up the phone and quietly listen in on the other guy's calls.

He's a zoomer, you need to start off by explaining to him that back then the telephones didn't have Instagram installed.
