Especially since running nVidia's own display driver cleanup tool genuinely seems to fix or at least greatly reduce occurrences of The Bug.
Still think I'm gonna have to take it back to the shop though. I honestly don't know where else to go from here. Or, at least, I have some ideas, like ripping out the ASUS bloatware root and stem and reseating hardware, but I'm not going to be able to go scorched earth on The Bug until I know for certain that I can't get a working replacement.
So if you uninstall the nvidia driver then you end up using the generic windows one meaning you’re probably utilizing less of the hardware on the graphics card. Like that’s kind of what the third party driver does beyond the generic one: takes the high(er) level description of a graphics pipeline and maps that to the various black magick acceleration mechanisms on the card, it’s better than the generic driver because it better understands the facilities available. My guess is that your intel titty bounce jiggle physics unit or something is malfunctioning, but slow path rendering avoids using it so that’s why turning off hw acceleration or uninstalling drivers improves the situation.
I mean I really don’t know anything for sure, but it kinda sounds good at least 🤷 -
2024-11-02 at 3:16 PM UTCJust take it back to the store and tell them you want one that works not a broken one.

That's the plan but it's gonna be very strange when they ask "what's wrong with it"

I dunno this computer needs holy water and a priest. Never seen or heard of anything like this in my life -
2024-11-03 at 12:06 AM UTCTook the Demon Machine back to the store and they tried to replicate the issue but couldn't on their monitor, so I had to buy a new monitor. I was planning on getting one during Black Friday anyway. Got it all home, and WHAMO! The pixel was still fucking there. I think they "couldn't replicate it" because the mess of singular errant pixels was hiding behind the thick layer of dust and grime on the monitor they were using to test it. I knew a new monitor wouldn't work. Well, I didn't know. I really thought the monitor might help. There was a chance. A slim hope.
Had to go all the way back, with scronny dutifully lugging the busted piece of shit up and down stairs and halfway across town both times. Traded that bitch in and got me a new one. She's... she's not throwing pixels at me. Not a feisty one like that.
No longer pulling my hair out. -

An overpriced and not-that-great one, but I couldn't convince my parents to go in on a more expensive pre-built (and they were pretty insistent on it being a prebuilt). It's an 8gb 4060 TI, which is actually kind of gimped and controversial (as I'm led to understand things, in a sane world the 4060 would have been the 4050 - worse specs than the nominally comparable 30 series card).
I would have preferred a 4070 S or a 4070 TI, but my folks didn't actually pay for the thing outright - the birthday present came in the form of contributing $1000CAD to the purchase of a new computer, with the remainder of the cost being a loan I'd have to repay them. Between the prebuilt and a new monitor, after taxes, I already owe them slightly more than the $1000 they were willing to cover. And I got this shit on sale! It was like 25% off! The 4070 would have inflated the price >five hundred bucks factoring out the sale, and they were pretty squeamish about that (and, if I'm being perfectly honest, so was I - this was a heretofore unheard amount of money for them to spend on a gift for me and I felt vaguely guilty even getting this one). -
2024-11-06 at 10:36 PM UTCOn the bright side, I'm perfectly happy with gaming in 1080p, and this is enough to get extremely decent graphical quality on most modern games at that resolution. I can't run Cyberpunk 2077 with insane levels of raytracing, but I can run it with medium-high levels of raytracing. Coming from a 1070 TI, I'm more than satisfied. 😤

Alas, one of the big problems with the 4060 is that they apparently decreased the bus size? I mean, I don't actually know what that means, but my gut understanding is that throwing a bunch of RAM at it to serve as supplemental VRAM will not be enough to overcome its problems. Bottlenecked by the architecture of the chip or something. -
2024-11-07 at 1:42 AM UTCAssigning main memory to a gpu to use as vram is a horrible idea lol, even if you can do it, it’s going to crusify your performance. The entire reason gpus have expensive specialized vram is because main memory is not fit for purpose

2024-11-07 at 1:56 AM UTCYou can use the 3D-Analyze to tailor and trim game program features to improve game performance. It's free and fun to tinker with. You can bypass requirement checks and force loading, or force disable rendering capabilities.

I kind of just assumed it wouldn't be used until VRAM is overloaded to the point that it would be preferable to nothing. Like, surely there is a break even point where that happens?

Speckles I'm gonna be real wit u: I am retarded and having this degree of freedom over my hardware with my level of understanding would only spell disaster. -
2024-11-07 at 3:01 AM UTCA good trick to get to ALL the settings on Windows 10/11 in one place:
Create a New Folder on your desktop.
Rename the New Folder to GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
You will get a new thumbnail with all the advanced Windows settings in there. -

This sounds like one of those troll-y "delete windows system32 to make your computer run faster" things and yet somehow it's real. -

4060TI is fine, don't listen to the retard nerds who want to run everything at 1000fps.
