I think it boils down to mechanics and transferable skills. A person that's good at MMO games will only be good at MMO games. RTS players, Competitive shooters and such are much more highly respected. Action RPG's are not a competitive genre and has almost zero transferability of skill to any other genre

the only real skill in ARPGs is crunching numbers to come up with builds but you don't even need to do that
most people who play them just follow other peoples' build guides
