it was more elongated until it was introduced into the USA for a natural insect controller for aphids and other insects that damage crops and flowers.
you buy them in containers at places like home depot. half of them are dead when you pore them out. but they breed the same season that ladybugs do and have since (30 year span) changed their body type to mimic ladybugs

it was believed they were possibly mimicry and breeding into ladybugs (but not capable of cross breeding) which has caused a massive decline in Ladybugs.
we're losing out natural species to an invasive insect that doesn't do much for pest control
