media is not timeless but technology is and new media can be created from what is around. I would rather save as much potential as possible than see any shadow of the former world.
I would even seek out and destroy all film and television and make a computer virus that deletes it and put a copy on every CD-ROM with free operating systems I give out for free in my trade so it spreads far and wide, hopefully.
All classical works and cultural arts are useless to preserve except for historical purposes. -

This isn't because of the government. They were trying to use this data to push a copyright infringement case through the court, now there is no case because the data has been deleted by hackers.
This is the best outcome for everyone. Some lone insane actor black swan event said "Fuck it" and had no loyalty to waybackmachine, or the government and deleted everything just because they can.
This aligns perfectly with effective accelerationism as preserving data does not move technology fast enough. We should be actively trying to send humanity back to the stone age and blowing up computers which will create market incentive to make them not explode so easily. The only way forward is to move back!

You don't even need to make a profit to become a target for attack at this point because the new mantra of the market is "attack everything, all the time, at all times, forever"
This ensures that there is never a period where nobody is under attack which creates long term market resilience, solutions and incentive to defeat these solutions which drives competition between hackers and sysadmins in a perpetual cycle of innovation and growth. This is the best outcome for everyone.

It was the inevitable consequence of a flawed system that lacked strong market incentives to invest in security and fireproofing to prevent any potential disasters. We have computers now so whatever was lost must not have been very important. Just a bunch of shitty fanfic literature for angsty teens

Preserving copyrighted content is as based as it gets but you will never pay for those server unless you take Bitcoin donations. Why do none of these people do that?
Paying for it out of pocket at a loss is not sustainable either -
