Reading A Woman in Berlin, 8 Weeks in a Conquered City

  1. #1
Berlin 1945 was a pretty interesting place, and this is a pretty well written diary, full of little details of life in Berlin as the Russians close in. Unlike some WW2 diaries, this one is real, which is probably why it's not so well known. It has all sorts of little details, like people worrying that their money will be worth nothing, public transport being restricted to essential users, and people walking while empty trams pass by, people being bombed out of their homes and staying with neighbours. It's all a lot less apocalyptic and a lot more realistic than fiction makes out. Details like soldiers take off their uniform, move back in with their wife, and even join the women and old men in the basement shelters (which were only used during air raids or shelling due to being horrible), and no one gives a shit. That's kinda the hallmark of realism, that not really giving a shit, that's what fiction never really gets right. It apparently has lots of German women fucking Russian troops, but I haven't gotten to the part where the Russians take over yet, Hitler hasn't even shot himself yet. The book describes people who hold out hope for victory despite everything, like Hitler has a secret plan and we just need to trust the plan, they sound just like Q-Anon tards.

He's sick in the head for wanting to read real accounts of rape and women killing themselves. The world would be better off without people like him.

It's true that it happened but I think a lot of it was Germany propaganda "Don't let the Soviets catch you or you will be brutally raped!! they are monsters!" so people would shoot themselves days before troops got to their city. I remember hearing about this and some soldiers thought it was insane that people were so brainwashed

I'm not saying such atrocities never happened but it wasn't like what the German propaganda was claiming at the time. As the end approached fewer people were buying into what the state under Hitler told them when the “National Committee for a Free Germany” started

I have no idea where these people were getting it. SS Propaganda leaflets? I mean all the food was rationed and they probably had political officers there hyping people up.

GPT seems to confirm my theory
Word of Mouth: One of the most immediate and direct forms of spreading information and fear in the final days of the war came through local Nazi officials, police officers, and SS personnel. As Berlin faced encirclement, these officials were often present at ration distribution points, bomb shelters, and other public areas, delivering dire warnings about the consequences of falling into Soviet hands. These were often verbal rather than printed, meant to create panic and reinforce the idea of a brutal Soviet occupation.

Leaflets and Posters: Though large-scale printing efforts were no longer feasible, small-scale leaflet production and wall posters were still used. These materials, often hastily produced, depicted the Red Army as barbaric and ruthless, emphasizing the potential for mass rape, looting, and murder. Some of these leaflets were likely distributed directly in public areas or pinned in communal spots such as ration offices, public squares, or even bomb shelters.

Radio Broadcasts: Nazi radio stations continued to operate in some capacity until very late in the war. The Reich Ministry of Propaganda, under Joseph Goebbels, continued to broadcast messages portraying the Soviet advance as a dire threat to civilians. These broadcasts, both on public and military frequencies, were designed to keep people fearful and defiant, hoping to delay or disrupt any thoughts of surrender.

Public Speeches and Announcements: Local Nazi leaders, including SS officers, sometimes gave public addresses in towns and cities. These speeches warned civilians about the Red Army's impending arrival and stressed the supposed savagery of the Soviets. Such addresses were made in public spaces like town squares or ration distribution points, with the aim of encouraging people to keep fighting or resist surrender at all costs.

A lot of atrocities were happening on a large scale but the propaganda was hyping it up even more I think. The Red Army had a policy to shoot people if they did crime against civilians (in contrast to modern Russia) but in comparison the Germany army when invading the East was told to loot the civilians and "live off the land"

I'm not saying either of them was better but there was mass propaganda at both sides and a lot of people in Germany were convinced it was the end of the world and then you come out of the bomb shelter to get some stale bread and an SS officer tells you NO IT'S ACTUALLY WAY WORSE THAN THAT!!! TOTALLY! making it seem like some cosmic horror was gonna destroy the universe and torture them for 1000 years with evil communist majick, and their childrens children (which kinda did happen)

I think it was the guilt of "going along" with the rape and pillage of the east as the reds called it, and when they had to retreat back to Berlin they thought there would be mass reprisals, and then when any atrocities do happen at any scale the government can pretty much tell you anything at that point and why wouldn't they believe it?

Entire cities being destroyed and people losing entire families and everything they ever knew being obliterated, not like out of nowhere they knew exactly who was coming, and their motivations.

Except the Red Army mostly just wanted to put a communist flag on the Reichstag and yoink their economy. The writing was on the wall at that point. If you lived you would probably end up being a communist slave being tortured in a brick factory and force sterilized

Also everyone was paranoid about the world hating the German people forever and never forgiving them which is why they let African immigrants walk all over them now PLEASE LOVE US!!!! and is one of the few countries where a Swastika is a criminal offense

The topic of the thread is up to interpretation. Donald clearly read the about section of this book and it's mention of the mass rapes, but he mentions that the German women were just fucking the soldiers. He's encouraging people here to read real accounts of rapes which happen daily because he's fucked in the head. I'm not deleting my posts because that's work and don't respect your authority.

If you want to speak to the specific account given in the book, or its implications, you can do so. You can even call soy mentally ill due to his interpretation of or reaction to the book. What you can’t do is go on a screed about his mental illness in general. You can not like the rules or how they get enforced, that’s ok, that’s not your job. But if you want to keep posting, you’re going to stay on topic
