In news that is both predictable but also gut-wrenching, Vimm's Lair, one of the oldest and longest-lasting ROM sharing and emulation sites on the internet, has been forced to remove hundreds of ROMs and game postings at the request of multiple parties. In a state on its front page, it announced:

Vimm's Lair has been asked to remove many games from The Vault on behalf of Nintendo, Sega, Lego, and the ESA. While most of these games (and the hardware to play them) haven't been sold in decades, ultimately it's their prerogative so these games are now gone for good.

Though Vimm's Lair has agreed to these takedown requests, it is not shutting down. It continues to archive old game manuals, provide emulator advice for newcomers, and provide ROMs for a wide variety of games and retro game consoles that don't exist anywhere else. As to why they might be a target to a takedown request now, it might stem from the approval of emulators on mobile app stores. In Vimm's case, they even openly thanked a new wave of traffic to their site thanks to the Delta emulator that got approved for the iOS app store. To say some company's are not happy that multiple tech sites are reporting about how seamless and easy it is to get RetroArch running on an Apple TV these days is likely an understatement.

Now, here's one slight disclaimer. Giant Bomb does not formally promote the piracy of video games and advocating in favor of the piracy of video games is formally against the community rules. However, emulation has always been a gray area and in the case of Vimm's Lair, a large portion of the games it hosted have no hope of ever being re-released on modern technology. That includes tie-in games to movies or comic books that have expired rights or titles from studios that are bankrupt or the rights are incredibly murky. And, it is no secret that this site and its staff content relies on emulators like RetroArch or services that connect to emulation (i.e., Retro Achievements). Nonetheless, please avoid directing or promoting users to engage in piracy.
