Seriously those fax boards can't cost more than a few hundred $$$ to develop, a few chips, connector ports and fucking POTS phone line adapters.
    Hardware

    POTS: Two RJ61 Connectors
    56 MIPS CPU per port
    120 MIPS DSP per port
    Global DAA
Software controlled hardware reset per port
    Software readable 48bit serial number
    Single interrupt per board
Power consumption: Less than 1 Watt
    Mix-and-match Mainpine and third-party hardware

    * Product comes with two(2) 4-line splitters for a total of 8 RJ11 phone lines.
    Fax Specifications
    according to GPT
    Estimated Total Cost:

    Adding up these rough estimates:

    Components: $4 (RJ61) + $5 (CPU) + $10 (DSP) + $5 (DAA) + $1 (reset) + $1 (serial number) + $1 (interrupt) + $2 (power) + $2 (compatibility) = $31 - $61
    PCB Manufacturing and Assembly: $100 - $200

    Total Cost Estimate: $131 - $261

This is a rough estimate and can vary significantly based on the specific choices of components, suppliers, and manufacturing processes. Additionally, bulk purchasing of components can reduce the costs per unit significantly.

But the board retails for $6000 USD?? probably because only 1 company is making them. I call this the "only game in town" market factor where when you control the market you can charge anything, and people WILL pay for it BECAUSE you are "the only game in town"

That's why I like working with restricted and hazardous chemicals like when I sold potassium nitrate to farmers you can sell it for any price and sometimes you are the only game in town with the explosives precursor handling license that can also carry 30% hydrogen peroxide so you can corner the market and double the price if you wanted.

The problem is usually the proprietary chips on a lot of old boards, unless someone has reverse engineered them they are no longer in production and finding replacements is very difficult and expensive.

Many old computers have proprietary chips in them such as ULAs, PLA or CIA chips. Here in recent years many of the more popular ones have been reverse engineered and modern replacements are now available.

Fax card propriety chips not so much...

People think in 10-20 years it will be impossible to get certain replacement parts for old hardware but I think the market will be so decentralized, even with chip manufacturing that people will be reproducing CRT's in factories and a golden era of clone pre 2000's hardware will start entering the market for dirt cheap

And in the end everyone that invested into vintage hardware will probably kill themselves

I think CRTs will make a comeback in the future too. Not so many years ago you could buy old monitors and TVs for like $5 in Goodwill. Already now people are charging a premium for old monitors etc. MANY of those old CRTs were scrapped so they are getting fewer and fewer as far as availability goes and when you find one someone wants $$$$ for it.

New recreations of old hardware though doesn't mean it's "as good as"...tape decks/boomboxes for example. You can buy modern recreations of those but they are ALL using the same crappy tape system as there is only 1 factory in the world left making them and it's a pretty crappy tape deck system.

Also Dolby withdrew support for tape years ago so any new tape deck is without it...if you want a quality authentic tape playing experience you have to buy a vintage tape deck...modern recreations don't do it.

It's a bit like buying shitty Crosley record players to pay vinyl...dumb...

purchasing and reusing old, obsolete and underperforming hardware are just middle aged mens casual attempt to recapture the youth that theyve lost.

    the real youth simulator.

Yes, 3 times in the old car (though the last one was a dumb 21yr old stoner dude)...hence the dashcam as the solution.

As I pointed out it's not under performing, it actually performs much better than shitty modern recreations...like I said ONLY 1 factory in the world making tape mechanisms and no matter what tape deck/player you buy..they all have the same shitty mechanism in them now...(and no metal tape or dolby support).

The modern way of building is inferior to the past...just look at architecture as another example of that.

REMAIN IN AN ESTABLISHMENT OF FURTHER EDUCATION CHILD!

all new bluetooth cum multi drive players play stereo and im sure those more expensive ones support dolby srs.

also your confusing construction with architexture design.

modern buildings are maybe uglier in the west but that doesnt mean theyre structurally inferior to the buildings of the past.

    Different format dumbo.

    Um no you are.

I didn't say it did....but structurally they are inferior...you only need to take a look at a modern home to know that and see the shitty cheap materials they use

My old house in England was built in 1806 and is still going strong...solid double brick walls and slate roof. Check back in 200yrs and see if a 2010 built house is still as good as the day it was built

I remember when I first came to the US and saw home construction here using fucking wooden matchstick crap and thinking WTF am I in the middle ages?
