   🇿🇦🦏 First radioactive rhino horns to curb poaching in South Africa
   
   South African scientists injected radioactive material into live rhino horns to make them easier to detect at border posts in a pioneering project aimed at curbing poaching.
   
   James Larkin, director of the University of the Witwatersrand's radiation and health physics unit who ran the initiative, told AFP he had put "two tiny little radioactive chips in the horn" as he administered the radioisotopes on one of the large animals' horns.
   
   The radioactive material would "render the horn useless.. essentially poisonous for human consumption" added Nithaya Chetty, prof. and dean of science at the same university.
   
   "The radioactive material's dose was so low it would not impact the animal's health or the environment in any way"
   
   South Africa is a home to a large majority of the world's rhinos and as such is a hotspot for poaching driven by demand from Asia, where horns are used in traditional medicine for their supposed therapeutic effect.

   I doubt that making the horn radioactive can both make it dangerous for human consumption and be safe for the rhino, seems like it's both or neither

   doesnt this prove anti poaching policy ismneither economically viable or prudent.
   
   if their government care for the welbeing of its citizens then it would make poaching a sport and a source of income for the country.

    This lol. And I doubt even if they could they'd intentionally try and give downstream consumers radiation poisoning. Guessing they're going to give customs geiger counters or something to try and detect the horns being exported. Probably just threw in the "essentially poisonous for human consumption" to try and scare people off.
