Do you think a DIY nuclear bomb is possible?
-
2024-07-05 at 1:51 AM UTCI dont know a lot about physics or anything, but i think making a nuclear bomb could be possible for an individual.
I've seen instructions on building basic nuclear reactors before, and there was even a kid who did it once who got swatted, so it seems like that could be easy (at least easy in terms of weapons of mass destruction). I know a nuclear reactor on its own is just a source of power, but without cooling it could cause a nuclear meltdown, which leads to situations like in chernobyl or three mile island. So thats interesting but its not a bomb, which is what im more interested in. I googled it and found that the reason nuclear reactors cant explode is something to do with not having enough uranium and nuclear reactors usually having coolant systems and various security measures. So do you think that some thermonuclear weapon could be crafted by an individual with an understanding of nuclear physics? -
2024-07-05 at 2:01 AM UTCUnfortunately not until nuclear power is more accepted.
In 200 years time, when human populations are lower and poorer, and every new project involves the spinning up of a new nuclear fission reactor, with genuine fusion research everywhere. I definitely imagine someone building themselves a thermonuclear bomb as a sideline from their nordic river pilot project. Why not? -
2024-07-05 at 2:08 AM UTCI think they're trying to find out if anyone here is a potential terrorist.

2024-07-05 at 2:22 AM UTCThat's a massively simplified diagram.
No matter what you do with nuclear technology you find smart undergrads thinking "could I find a shortcut to a nuclear bomb here".
And there are whole complicated branches of nuclear science, carefully observed by glow in the dark sorts, who are very well paid to monitor it all.
But sadly making a nuclear bomb involves quite a lot of prep work, and there are no real shortcuts which have been identified so far. -
2024-07-05 at 2:36 AM UTCa gun-type nuclear bomb is relatively easy to make if you can do the math, the issue has always been obtaining enough fissile material for it.
the reason nuclear reactors don't detonate is because they are specifically designed to create a slower, sustained reaction rather than an immediate one, and the fissile material they use physically cannot react fast enough to cause an explosion -
2024-07-05 at 2:46 AM UTCYou'd be swatted for the energy bill.
-
2024-07-05 at 4:02 AM UTCyes, I have posted several avenues for accomplishing this.
Originally posted by scuffed jim carrey Graham Allison's argument was that it is theoretically possible for individuals with relatively modest means and expertise to create a nuclear weapon using a small amount of fissionable material and readily available equipment. He claimed that with the right materials, several master's level engineering students with several hundred thousand dollars and off-the-shelf equipment could make a device that would explode. This claim is based on the fact that nuclear weapons are fundamentally simple devices, relying on the basic principles of nuclear physics to release a tremendous amount of energy. Allison argued that the greatest obstacle to building a nuclear weapon is obtaining the necessary fissionable material, such as highly enriched uranium or plutonium. However, he noted that with the right connections, it is possible for determined individuals to obtain such material on the black market. Overall, Allison's argument highlights the need for strong international efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and secure existing nuclear material.

2024-07-05 at 4:51 PM UTCThe real technological hurdle is enrichment of uranium which is almost impossible to do "DIY" but rogue nation states have figured it out.
Aum Shinrikyo acquired their own uranium ore from a mine on land they purchased. But when it came time to enrich it they realized they needed highly specialized machines to proceed. They took their best scientists with STEM degrees and gave them shell companies, university connections and everything they would need.
The problem was the handful of companies on the planet that make this kind of stuff (mostly in the USA) all report to the same agencies and they aren't allowed to sell even a training manual without reporting it an international agency. So the sale was denied and Aum gave up it's nuclear research before it even got off the ground.
The machine they were trying to purchase was a "Mark IVxp Interferometer"
Similar devices seem to priced in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and there are probably a few dozen other specialized pieces of equipment that requires a high level of training to use.
This was the part that the Manhattan project had the most difficulty with and required billions of dollars of investment from various nation states and multiple constructed complexes specifically designed for one purpose and custom manufacturing to overcome. -

iirc he enriched Americium he scraped off of clocks, enough for a ghetto reactor but not suitable for a bomb -

His mom killed herself from the stress and then he did as well? something like that. Also he exposed his mother to a fuckload of rads and she probably would of died from cancer regardless. but the stress caused her to board the bus.
he literally was creating a plan so every person could have a small nuclear reactor to run free(ish) power which of course the DoE wouldn't allow because they're influenced by big oil and other energy groups. -

right but they were worried about a dirty bomb. BTW it was going critical in the tool shed. he built an open demon-core by letting it just sit and waste away in the tool shed while he left for some time.
the world is full of people like this gone undetected.
its only a matter of time before something like this happens out there. -
2024-07-05 at 5:08 PM UTCthe level of purity you need for bomb grade material is extremely high that I don't think any person could reasonably produce any amount for under a million dollars and I don't think it's a one time cost of just buy all the shit and cook a batch. I think each batch would probably cost $1 million so you hope to process as much as possible. The way these large companies do it and make a profit is probably by LEAN manufacturing methods of cutting waste and improving efficiency.
Even if you had an infinite source of uranium ore I don't think any dedicated group on earth could pull this off, except for a nation state. There are just too many moving parts. It's actually extremely impressive that North Korea has this all figured out with no help from anyone.
I think DPRK uses the more outdated methods. The technology has actually completely changed especially in the past 10 years, there are more efficient enrichment methods and many new concepts in that industry. I think the outdated methods are more based on scientific fundamentals from the last several hundred years so having any understanding of science can get you pretty far but nowadays you probably need to also know computer engineering or some shit. We need to return to the glory days of analog nuclear technology -

Uranium is in large amounts in the deserts of the southwest. from California through Nevada, Arizona and NM there was so much uranium that it was like a gold rush for people to gather and sell to the US government in the 1940s-1960s.
its more of a matter of converting the natural uranium into higher quality. but it's interesting that the US was able to do this in 3 years to create the first Atomic bombs which they failed at setting off until someone invented an array implosive device which worked but only yielded between 2-5% of energy. meaning it was a huge dirty bomb more than a successful nuke.
it was then the original fusion concept was invented to create a Hydrogen bomb with a much higher yield of success. basically the atomic bomb is the trigger to create the Hydrogen energy weapon.
Iran has that ability and so does North Korea as did both India and Pakistan since the 1970s-1980s.
get enough people together with chemical degrees and you could probably create a low yield nuke. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet.
then there is the missing 200 plus low yield (about half the size of the Hiroshima Bomb) briefcase bombs that went missing in Ukraine after the fall of the USSR in 1991.
where did they go? where did the briefcase bombs go. there is a few hundred of them just floating around somewhere or in someones basement just waiting for the right moment to end up on the black market? -
