Under EU261 you are entitled to €400 compensation if your flight is more than 1,500km, and delayed by more than three hours.
Our flight from a Greek island to Ireland was delayed by 21 hours due to some problem the plane had with the boarding/landing steps. Ryanair planes have front landing steps built into the plane, something they came up with to save on airbridge fees and reduce costs. They work great, and let you get to walk right onto the plane, which is cool, unless its raining.
We were sitting in the airport all night while they tried to figure out what to do. They flew a mechanic in from Milan on a small jet, but he wasn't able to fix the problem. Apparently hey had to fly a team of mechanics and some spare parts in from Heathrow to get the plane going again, but that was while we were in a hotel. €400 for a day sitting in the airport and sleeping is pretty good.
