Baltimore. Looks like a ship crashed into one of the pylons and brought the whole thing down, sending multiple cars and pedestrians into the river (though it was at 2am, so traffic was light)
Rescue workers in Baltimore are searching for about 20 people and multiple vehicles believed to have fallen into the Patapsco River after a major bridge at the city's port was struck by a large ship, a Fire Department spokesperson told CNN. The official warned that the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge was a "mass casualty multi agency incident," and conditions were unsafe for rescuers due to "some cargo or retainers" hanging from the structure, freezing conditions and limited visibility.
The ship is owned by Mitsui & Co subsidiary Grace Ocean of Singapore and operated by Maersk between the East Coast of the US and east Asia, according to Clarksons data.
A Grace Ocean official has confirmed to TradeWinds that the vessel involved was their 9,962-teu Dali (built 2015), which vessel tracking data shows as remaining stationary under the bridge at the time.
“We can confirm that this is correct,” said the official, who added the company was working with the ship’s technical manager Synergy Marine to determine what happened.
“At this time we are still trying to get information,” he said.
The owner and manager issued a statement confirming the Dali hit one of the bridge pillars.
The vessel was underway with two pilots on board. It was heading to Colombo in Sri Lanka.
Not an expert, but aren't the crew on cargo vessels usually Filipinos, who do a fairly good job?
I know they have been replacing them with cheap Indians. Some people said the Ever Given parking sideways in the Suez Canal was due to that. And There'a also a chance the pilots are American diversity hires.

I'm not sure. I know third-world labourers are common for crew but I doubt those types usually end up as captains

if i understand maritime shit correctly, the pilot of the vessel [ie the nigga steering the boat] was probably a local (they get ferried back to shore after navigating the boat out of coastal waters)

This seems likely. Probably someone everyone knows is a disaster, who spends their time arguing with everyone, but cos it's hyper politically correct America no one dares say or do anything about it.
Looks like the ship lost power multiple time in the lead-up to the collision, so as funny as it would be to chalk this up to the local pilot diversity, I'm thinking it was just a poorly maintained ship.
