Even in SA, you drove and shot at things and that was pretty much it. GTA 4 didn't have a lot of places but there was a (perhaps unnecessarily) high level of interactivity. Things like mantling, all the different angle contingent animations and special cases for car entry, that thing where you could ragdoll out of a car if you didn't put your seatbelt on. Fairly small things but they generally require a lot of code and testing to make work well. Maybe not what a game needs to be fun but technically quite interesting I thought.

Lol, when I played VC as a kid it was a rip uploaded to limewire or whatever the popular filesharing thing was at the time and they literally just deleted all the dialog to cut down on the transfer size so all the cutscenes played but had no sound. I had no idea what the story was and I played through the whole game like that.

I will always love GTA4 because of that boardwalk in front of the last house you unlock

I used to get fucked up and drive down that boardwalk hitting pedestrians and wooden benches for hours yelling "SPLINTERS!!" while laughing maniacally

The way the animation was done makes it fucking hilarious

Oh and the drunk mechanics, where you can go get pissed and it fucks up your walking/driving but can be done if you're careful, that was kinda fun though again it required you doing the shitty friend outings.
