I need to buy a blu-ray player

None of what I said matters if you don't have a 4K, preferably HDR capable TV.

But if not then why would you care about BluRays? Whatever you want to spend on a BluRay player would be better spent getting a modern TV first.

And if you have a 4K TV then you shouldn't get an outdated 1080p BluRay player.

You should at least get one that supports all the current codecs and formats, and can push your TV's full resolution (the current standard resolution that will stay around for many years), and will likely be able to play new BDs for years to come without disk or output encryption lockout etc.

Or just research how to rip BDs and get a streaming box you can load and play the files through with Plex or whatever. There are some Pioneer BD drives that are great for ripping available for like $100-200.

I only ever bought one so I could watch this anime which I was convinced at the time had some sort of secret key to the worldwide apocalyptic genocide that was about to take place and it only came on blue ray but as far as getting tips about that whole scenario I don't think having top of the line resolution or anything really effects it

I recommend the "rip drive + stream box" option because it's more future proof and you can just get whatever streaming boxes you want to play the files. They are basically always going to upcharge you for bundling a BD drive with the appropriate video output capabilities. Just buy them separately.

Doubt it supports modern HDR formats even at 1080p.

Apparently according to Google, PS3 has zero HDR support

i may do that because i am on the fence wheteh ri should hack my ps3 or not. I dont want to lose access to the psn store and online gaming multiplaeyr capabilities on it esp since it is the last console and still full of players with fre online play but i have a shitload of blue rays form usa when i lived in cali that wont play on it due to region locks.

I will keep that in mind if I ever decide to watch another movie or anime lol. Nothing short of the end of the world inspired me to last time though so it may be a while

I do not think they output Atmos either.

Unfortunately there's no good shortcut to just buying a good modern BluRay player because BluRay is an evolving standard with unhelpful nominal continuity of that one brand name. There have been new BD standards quietly introduced all along the way that even make older BD players borderline useless, like the entire chain of encryption nonsense from the early days of BD.

I am too old and blind and deaf to notice the trivial differences in quality between streaming something on my PS5 on a 4K UHD and streaming it on a Blu-ray player

Then you're too old and blind and deaf to notice the difference from using BluRay vs just streaming from any streaming service or playing a BDrip torrent.

I don't play videogames. My brother owns a PS5 but has his own house that he lives in with his wife in a town not too far away from here. I don't like where he lives because that's the town where my high school was located in. And still is. I had a fun time in high school, especially so in the 8th and 9th grade, but after having spent six years in a row there, you can understand why I don't like to be there.

You can put Plex on them and get full Atmos and DV output.

I really liked the soundtrack so that's why I bought it, along with the Blu-Ray of said movie. It came with a nice booklet that featured behind-the-scenes pictures of the movie, which was a nice surprise!

You know there are external drives for computers and are dirt fucking cheap. However if you that broke go to goodwill or value village and buy a used blu ray player at most it’d be 15 bucks

Roku is a brand of hardware streaming devices and they also have their own online video streaming service called Roku, you don't need the streaming service for the hardware devices, you can use whatever apps are available in your region.

I prefer my items to be brand new, due to my OCD. I have an Acer computer that comes without a DVD drive.

They don't really cater to my needs, to be honest. This is the first time ever I've bought a blu-ray and it's been 10 years since I bought a cd.
