learning gayass linux( my false outrageous)

2024-02-09 at 4:14 AM UTCI'm doering mint linux. It worked goodly with all OEM hardware. I did apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, got all my stuff in order so I was feeling like a pretty big badass, heard.
Then I put in an Intel ARC GPU , no video output from it ( maybe because the motherboard manufacturer hasn't released a BIOS update with support for Resizable Bar, they say it's super-duper-important to have this for Intel ARC cards but I digressed. ( That's a whole other retarded rabbithole I want to try later, patching the option into the BIOS, as support for ReBar has been added to other manufacturer's MOBOs with same chipset ). So after fiddle-farting around for a bit trying to see if the computer could tell I put a GPU in it.. the integrated graphics started dropping the signal for ~1sec every 30-60 seconds. I said FUCK THAT, turned it off and installed an Nvidia RTX 4060. Power it back on and I believe this is from GRUB, it says the usual notification that SGX is disabled, but then another line about 'unrecognized chipset' it's barely on screen long enough to read it, stays powered-up but i have no further video output. Try re-powering it and get teh same thing. Remove the GPU and now I just get the grub thing about no SGX like normal, and then lose video output..
Are you not supposed to physically install new hardware with linux without making like a forum thread about how to do it first? I'm just confused why it broke the computer and it cAN'T be used now cause it seems like it nuked the integrated graphics video-output. Anyway this is my false-outrageous. I kinda want to learn how to fix it , but also I know it will be much faster to just wipe it and do a fresh-install ( it installed linux mints hella fast ) , or probably even better to just put Win10 on it and quit punishing myself heard.
I can spam escape after re-powering it and get to some GRUB command line thing but dont really know what to do with it. -

I got to the point where you said you did apt-get... and i stopped reading.. apt-get is depreciated. just use apt.
cba to read the rest. sorry -
2024-02-09 at 4:34 AM UTCintel: if you're getting no output at all, even from post then that's probably an issue with the hardware/configuration
why would you want to use a 4090 with lunix, AI or something? typically the latest cards always have compatibility problems that take a while to get ironed out. in order to run it properly you'll need to install the proprietary nvidia drivers because they refuse to release their drivers open-source

It's just a 4060, and that's whatsup, thanks for da info. Package-managers normally only include open-source drivers/apps? I did not know that, heard. Yeah it looks like the 4060 was sold starting about 7 months ago, 40 series as a whole has been out over a year so it' doesn't seem super-duper new.

I don't want to mis-state it and mix up terms, but I believe so, yes. When I power-on, I see a notification about SGX is disabled for a couple seconds, and then lose video output but the system remains running. I believe that message about SGX comes from GRUB, it shows the same or similar notification on another ( functional )system I have Mint on
Gonna rummage around for adapters to see if the Display Port or VGA are putting anything out -

oh ok yeah I can't read numbers, fuck me I guess
by default most lunix distributions will not distribute closed-source packages with the operating system for security/licensing reasons, so you have to enable non-free repositories for apt before you can tell it to download and install them.

SGX is to do with the processor, not the GPU so that message shouldn't affect anything.
usually if you don't have the proprietary drivers installed the system will still boot just fine, you'll just be restricted to a low resolution with no 3d acceleration (compatibility mode). yeah it might be restricting output to a specific monitor port on the GPU until you install a properietary driver, I dunno, I haven't tried running lunix on a gayming machine in a while. if it gets as far as grub I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't go further unless there's some kind of driver conflict in the main OS.
maybe try reinstalling mint with the GPU installed? if you had a different GPU plugged in when you first installed it maybe it installed drivers for that GPU which are now causing proble,ms -
2024-02-09 at 5:44 AM UTCyou could troubleshoot by booting into recovery and/or ssh'ing in from another machine on the network but if it's a fresh install just reinstalling is probably easier

2024-02-09 at 6:15 AM UTCFound adapters n shitt. WIRES EVERYWHERE.. The motherboard has 1 each: HDMI, Display Port, VGA.
The HDMI is the output that became problematic after trying the Nvidia card ( well, my monitors might be gay, too, for not displaying it), I found out that the HDMI output displays perfectly fine on my cheap television. My little monitors refuse to display anything from it once the OS starts booting ( but they would display it before trying the Nvidia card. )
Both the VGA, and displayport signals adapted/converted to HDMI work fine on both my TV and little monitors.
I don't really understand what about the signal could have changed, in the 'Display' GUI on mint, it has a resolution drop down box where 1920x1080 is already set/selected, and 60.00Hz refresh rate, same as the setting on the other outputs. -
2024-02-09 at 6:29 AM UTCyou can't have integrated graphics and the GPU running at the same time, sounds like GRUB is outputting to integrated (ie. the HDMI port on the motherboard) and once it boots lunix is outputting to the nvidia card

Have you tried adding:nomodeset quiet splash
To GRUB boot arguements?
Immediately upon boot, press and hold SHIFT. You should get GRUB recovery and a list of kernels and recovery choices.
Press "e" to edit command line boot arguments.
You might have an entry that already says "quiet splash". Before this, add "nomodeset" so it reads "nomodeset quiet splash" and you should be able to simply hit ENTER to boot or possibly CTRL + X.
From there, you should be able to install the appropriate drivers -
