If you were a failed English or literature studies major in New York or Chicago turned cab driver how would you feel about yourself or your life?

Depends when. Certain periods, immigration was limited, so "unskilled" labour, like being a cab driver, could yield a solid middle class income. Like during any of the white periods of America, the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, maybe even into the 1990s.
Nowadays, if you drop out to drive a cab, you'll be trying very hard to afford so much as a place to live. This is due to the jedi influence on society.
