Was she wearing a nametag that said 'Vegan Cashier' or how did you obtain that knowledge? -

The purpose of terminator seeds is to make the seeds not propagate, not for pure profit but to avoid environmental concerns regarding biodiversity etc. Terminator seeds are a good thing, they curb those issues of choking out "natural" flora. It's the business model that Monsanto chooses around them that sucks. You can't blame the tech. -
2017-06-07 at 3:58 AM UTCthe two are tied together though - I'd hazard to say the GURTS tech was originally designed for profit, not to prevent cross-pollination or contamination or whatever else.
That's the argument I've always had - Monsanto are shady as fuck due to their business practices, it doesn't mean their products are dangerous though. -

Well ultimately if a for-profit company makes it, it's for profit. But creating terminator seeds for the purpose of profiting specifically off selling seeds each year (which is what I assume you are thinking of as their direct motivation) would be kind of silly; Monsanto doesn't make its revenue through raw seed sales, they do it through licensing the right to use their intellectual property.
The actual cost of buying seeds year on year is literally pocket change (something like $250 for 80,000 corn seeds for example), it is negligible. Monsanto makes money selling farmers contracts to actually use their seeds, and roping you into buying their insecticides, pesticides and a bunch of other ancillary stuff. Whether you do that that with GURT or not makes an absolutely negligible difference. The only reason it's not used now is because hippies made a fuss about it tbh, Monsanto just keeps losing the PR war.

2017-06-07 at 4:14 AM UTCThere are an enormous amount of myths about Monsanto. They actually seem like a pretty standard large corporation, they've just been made into the face of evil.

as I understand it one of the reasons why marjuana was originally banned was because hemp as a fibre threatened dupont's textile market share - it was made illegal to harvest on the basis that it could be abused as a drug, and there were ridiculous restrictions placed on what types of hemp could be grown even if it was only minimally psychoactive. The only ones certified are GMOs protected by pervasive IP laws; dunno if that's changed since the push to get weed legalised -
2017-06-07 at 4:28 AM UTCI mean it's changing of course but it's still for whatever reason highly regulated. Like I said don't know much about it I just think it's neat he's trying to get into it.

Also because William Randolph Hearst supposedly owned most of the Canadian paper mills that his papers "owed money to" and hemp fiber would undercut wood pulp for paper manufacturing. Don't quote me on this, I heard that shit from Joe Rogan. -
