   So I'm a type 1 diabetic and nearly died multiple times when I lived on the streets and didn't have insulin. Chances are, my dumbass is going to end up on the streets again at some point in my life and I'd really rather not go through the excruciating pain of ketoacidosis again. Any way for a guy to make his own insulin or what??

   these guys are using CRISPR to insert an insulin-producing gene into yeast as I understand it, extremely cheap and sidesteps all the major patents that drive prices up, don't think it's really something you can do at home without a lot of genetic/bio/chemistry knowledge though
