A very real possibility Western Canada could secede and become it's own nation in our lifetimes

folx the sentiment is very real it's always been very abstract and obscure but I see a lot of similarities between this growing movement of western supremacy in Canada and the MAGA movement.

West Canada is more like the USA while Eastern Canada is more like the "east" like the old school soviet union. I have heard whispers of militias planning to sever the ties and i've been saying this for years but i'm shocked it actually might happen, we are in the early stages of it happening if it continues like this

By very real do you mean not likely and viable at all and it's just a dogwhistle for increasingly autonomous provincial policies around oil and gas?

geographically I don't think any of them are independent enough to break away but it makes sense that they might increasingly tell the federal government to fuck off and seek greater autonomy, like a federation of states

Alberta is a beautiful part of the world, its very disheartening to think about a bunch of ragheads and bootlips running around the countryside praying to mecca in the streets and shagging there cousin in a log cabin.

It's funny Donbass' original desire for federalism is basically identical to the relationship Canada's provinces have with the federal government. Quebec really fucks stuff up and has veto power which in the same scenario would allow the eastern oblasts to veto NATO succession and other issues. Guess that ideas out the door now. I remember reading western journalists write about how it's crazy and not feasible when it gives them less autonomy than each state has with Washington.

It's more than that. Alberta not wanting to be part of CPP a federal pension plan because they feel like they are being robbed by eastern liberals

It's not just one province just look at all the pipeline debates and such, the west doesn't like their economy being stepped on by politicians who don't have their voters interests in mind. These leaders certainly aren't going to be the start of this movement if it does happen, but their stance and policies I think reflects the very real sentiment in the west, not entirely unique to the west either SEE QUEBEC

Economically I don't see how it can possibly not eventually break away as the provincial economies are independent of each other. Maybe something like a state system like the USA with state rights would be better.

this is way bigger and deeper than energy, energy is just the most surface level indications of things going towards this direction. When you start seeing stuff other than energy I think that would indicate growing sentiment against federalism
