I can understand someone telling a lie to get out of trouble or maybe to gain something. Some people lie about anything, like they prefer to lie over the truth even about little shit.

I lie to people I know IRL when I need to, typically to smooth something over or a lot of times people will ask me if I know something and I figured outa secret a long time ago that i'll share with u
If you keep your story straight no one can ever prove or disprove what you know or remember

I think some people just crave the attention they get from it and some are just pathological and just lie about whatever. As an adult the truly acceptable time to lie is to police, if you are lying for clout or attention something's off with you.

According to the psychology 402 class I took at Pennsylvania State auditorium University, it's because of a need to feel kewl, when they know that telling the truth wouldn't be too kewl looking at all.
For example, a cutie pie named Madilyn might come up to me at the drinking hole and say oh hi there sweetheart, how many fights have you been in in your lifetime and won? If it's more than 7 and you're telling me the truth, I will suck you off right here and now.

I play a character sometimes online, I guess that’s a form of lying. Sometimes I’ll pretend to have beliefs that I actually don’t in order to get a rise out of someone or debate them for no reason. I believe some refer to this behavior as “trolling”
