picture and video data question

  1. #1
My question is about extraneous data collected when a picture is taken or a video is recorded. What kind of data is contained in the picture and recording files? And how is the data collected changed through different devices? Say comparing the exif (i honestly dont know if I am using the right term) data from an iPhone 6 and a high end Nikon what is included in the recorded data?

Just a random thing I would ask to people who actually know technology.

Depends on the device you are capturing your media with. Smart phones/cameras sometimes embed geolocation data. In general the metadata that would potentially be in any given picture would include:
    • Camera make and model
    • Author of media file(In case it was edited with a program like photoshop)
    • Exif data
    • File comments/maker notes
    • ICC Profile

Here is an example of what an ICC profile looks like. Let's use a selfie my internet waifu Molly made.

Extracting the metadata gives us this ICC profile.

    http://pastebin.com/HjkfhssZ

We can see the ICC profile also indicates this picture was taken with an Apple device. But Geolocation/GPS was disabled or for some other reason not embedded.

EXIF is the standard used to store metadata in images; all of those pieces of information are stored in an EXIF structure.

EXIF is the only popular metadata format for images that I know of, but it's always possible to store information in nonstandard ways. If you were inclined to look for hidden data you'd want to check out the image standard (ie JPG, PNG etc) so you know how image data is stored, then strip out any data that doesn't contribute to the image and attempt to decode it... I think soph made a thread a while ago about hiding data in image files (steganography) that's got more information, but it's probably outside the scope of what you're asking.

Short version: EXIF is the only common format that metadata is embedded in images.

Right. Also with regards to the stegano thread, that was by AFJ but we did have some good discussion in there also on an introductory level since AFJ was basically asking what stegano is all about.

    Yes, that is correct.

I was trying to see if someone could tell me what picture I hid inside the picture that was posted.

But I'm assuming everyone got too paranoid or scared. Aldra was the only one I know of, that tried.

After a while I PM'd Soph the PW ...granted, he'd need the same program tho to open it. Atleast to my knowledge.

Its weird. Hiding it, is easier than retrieving it. To retrieve the hidden picture you need a "sacrificial picture" that will become the hidden one, if you've done everything correctly, and have the correct user applied PW that has to be atleast 16 characters long but can go all the way up to 72 characters. IIRC can also include symbols as well.

Sooo... What was in the picture? Also, PMs don't work or are very hit or miss around these parts and have been for a long time now (Lanny... Come on now, not being able to PM niggas sucks.)

Oh... I'm guessing thats why I never got a reply. lol

I can make another picture, if people wanna try again?

My question is more centered around the opposite of stenography. Basically stripping and image or video of that extraneous data. What programs and methods are available for that? Also out of a basic file such as a .mp4 or a .jpg how much of the data is EXIF or other and how much is the video or picture data?

To the best of my knowledge, the metadata of any given media file constitutes only a fraction of all the data contained within. Also, there are a number of tools and scripts that let you remove or modify metadata however a quick google search gave this simple program for windows. And a quick search of github gave this program written in C.

    https://github.com/maldevel/MetaScrub

But compiling this all to exe for a command line tool seems a little excessive. It so happens there is also a simple python application that might be useful. If you have the interpreter on your windows box get the requirements if you don't already have them with pip.

    pip install Pillow

    Save the source as cleaner.py

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Ma.../image_cleaner

Put all the image files you wish to strip exif off in a directory of your choosing. Going by the source, this is how you structure your arguments:

    cleaner.py -f C:\Users\TLN\MetaStrip -r

If it throws an error about having an invalid folder consider using double backslash '\\' in your directory structure.

I've seen some good stenography on a Russian chan.
How its presented is how you know. Since theres nothing telling you its stenography, but you know it is because of clues.
I could never fucking figure out the god damn fucking PW tho......pisses me off... since there was apparently some good stuff in some.

This is how they caught one of those Anonymous hackers.

An agent name 'Scott Jenson' made the criminal complaint and I had thought that this was the same Scott Jenson(who is a retired FBI agent that is now a private investigator) that placed a tracking device on my car some years ago. But it looks like they just have the same name.

This was the guy that put the tracker on my vehicle.

    1. Fuck anonimoose

    2. I would fucking strangle a bitch. Who even fucking keeps their geolocation on, good God woman. Also if fucking w0rmer was competent he would first have the gf send the pics to him so he could strip exif. Bonus points for style and not ratting on his buddies though.

I just use gimp, save as and uncheck the box to save the exif data. Most sites like facebook, imgur, will do this anyways. Then if you're paranoid you can right click and look at the exif data to make sure it's cleared.

Same way McAffee got busted in the jungle, one of the vice reporters published a photo with the gps data. You have to wonder how someone competent enough to hack the FBI doesn't bother to check that.
